Happy Holidays! Here’s a little peak at Tweetsie railroad, which is 3 miles from the house. We were booked through November but have plenty of vacancy in December. This would be the perfect thing to do at Christmas time 🎄. Come stay….you know you wanna 😍

So…I grew up in Northern VA and had 4 distinct seasons. Fall was my favorite by far. Then I moved to CA and then to FL and got further and further away from anything Fall like. As I’ve said in other posts, as a gift to ourselves to bandaid our hearts against the empty nest syndrome, Mr. Fehrway and I came to stay at the house for the peak season. It has not disappointed. And I finally got pumpkins for the porch.

If you have the opportunity when visiting the house make your way to West Jefferson. Wonderful way to spend an afternoon. About 20 minutes past West Jefferson is a teeny tiny town called Lansing. It’s a town known for its Blue Grass Festivals and camp grounds right on the river. They were hit hard by Helene and we try to go as often as possible. Their general store has amazing coffee, a nice wine selection, books and packaged mixes for cookies and muffins that are to die for. I usually make my own but sometime you gotta let someone else do the work. I recommend the Molasses cookie mix. Yum!

Mr. Fehrway and I have spent a couple of hectic months getting Baby Fehrway settled at college and adjusting to our empty nest. As a treat to ourselves we decided this year to come stay at the house during peak fall season. We got here yesterday (the trees are supposed to peak next week) and we are not disappointed. It warms this former Virginia girls heart to be back in the fall. These pics are from our meanderings this morning….from a walk across the street to a drive just up the rd. I hope you get the chance to experience this in person yourself.

Well our time here has come to an end for now. We sure did enjoy staying for three weeks. In that time we washed linens and rugs and I washed walls and we did a lot of gardening, as you know. In case you don’t remember what the garden area looked like before here are some side by side “before and afters” to remind you. We’ll be back for two weeks in October. Can…..not…wait!

One of the things we weren’t prepared for when we arrived this year is that we had to find a new gardener. Ours just basically gave up without telling us and had let the yard get pretty overgrown and w**d infested. It was a disappointment. It took us about a week to interview and find a new gardener, to get him to do a good yard clean up and to plant new plants (some hydrangeas, geraniums, Iris and more). The yard is a fun place for us to create. Hope you can enjoy it in person.

Since we were here a lot longer than normal this time Mr Fehrway got into a new routine. He wakes up super early and he would go to downtown Blowing Rock for his morning walks. He’d come home every day to show me pics from his adventures and he asked me to share them with you. We both love how just aesthetic this area is. Everywhere you look there is beauty.

One of the things that Mr Fehrway and I like to do every summer when we’re here is to make simple upgrades that make a big difference. This is a mountain home. And it rains. And the outdoor “stuff” can get funky. So to keep things fresh every summer I change our door mats and chair pads for the outdoor seating area. Here are this years choices.
