Mildred the bear was the mascot for Grandfather Mountain in Linville for 25 years. In 1968, Hugh Morton brought 2-year-old Mildred from the Atlanta Zoo. She roamed freely and became domesticated. A bear habitat was built in 1973 and it was agreed she would be kept in the habitat at night.

Located right across from the Valle Crucis Conference Center, this land is within the Valle Crucis Historic District and is also in a conservation trust to preserve the farmland and pasture land for tomorrow. It is beautiful on spring mornings with the fog hangs just a little longer in the hollers.
