The "Desert" That Fills with Lagoons

From the air, Lençóis Maranhenses, Brazil, looks like someone spilled turquoise paint across a white desert. Huge dunes stretch across the landscapee. But during the rainy season, water collects in spaces between them, creating beautiful blue and green lagoons.

And here's the surprise:

Technically, this isn't a true desert. The region receives too much rainfall. During drier periods, many lagoons shrink dramatically. Then the rains return, and the landscape transforms. Sand Dunes and swimming holes normally don't belong in the same sentence. Brazil apparently disagrees.

The Island Where the Trees Look Alien

There are strange trees. And then there are the trees of Socotra.

This remote island, part of Yemen, developed in relative isolation, allowing unusual plants to evolve. Its superstar is the dragon's blood tree. Its branches spread outward into a dense canopy shaped almost like an enormous umbrella or something designed for a science fiction movie.

And the Name?

The tree provides a distinctive red resin historically known as dragon's blood. A landscape filled with these trees doesn't look quite like anywhere else on Earth.
