The Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center invites you to a deep dive into the "Signs & Symbols" exhibit. This session moves beyond the visual art to explore the historical and spiritual weight of Adinkra, a pictorial language of the Akan people of Ghana.
We are honored to be joined by internationally acclaimed artist and master craftsman Hank D. Herring. Hank’s work is a testament to precision and intentionality; he hand-carves his own stamps from hardwood, selecting specific tight grains to ensure that the ancient symbols—not the wood pattern—remain the focal point.
During this discussion, we will explore:
• The Philosophy of Adinkra: How these symbols encapsulate complex concepts, traditional values, and historical fragments.
• The Craft: Hank’s process of "stirring the soul" through tactile, hand-carved heritage work.
• Modern Application: How the wisdom of these symbols can provide a framework for navigating everyday life and community connection.
This is a unique opportunity to engage with the intersection of West African tradition and contemporary Gullah-Geechee culture through the lens of a dedicated practitioner.
Admission: FREE to the public.
Join us as we explore how a single symbol can bridge centuries of history and provide a roadmap for the future.
