📬 **Community Resource: Let’s Bring Back Postcards!**

When was the last time you mailed a postcard?

I recently participated in an activity where a college student wasn’t quite sure what to do with a postcard. And it made perfect sense, as many of today’s young people have grown up with email, texting, social media, and instant messaging.

That’s why I thought this resource from the **South Carolina State Library** was such a fun idea! 💌

Postcards can give kids and teens a chance to practice something different while learning:

✍🏾 How to write a short message
📮 Where the address goes
📬 How something actually travels through the mail
🌎 A fun way to connect with people and places beyond a screen

Sometimes community resources don't have to address a crisis or solve a major problem. Sometimes they can simply help us **learn, connect, and try something new.**

Here's something families don't always talk about:

At some point, someone will have to make decisions about everything in your parents' home.

Furniture.
Clothing.
Photographs.
Important papers.
Family keepsakes.
Decades of belongings.

Those decisions are much harder when you're making them during a health crisis, after a loss, or while trying to move a parent quickly.

If your parents are able to participate in those decisions now, consider starting the conversation now.

What do they want to keep?
What has meaning?
What could be donated?
What would they like family members to have?

Decluttering doesn't have to mean throwing away someone's life.

Done thoughtfully, it can be a way of honoring their choices while they can still make them.

Sometimes the challenge isn't that help doesn't exist; we simply don't know where to find it.

This week's resource is the South Carolina Assistive Technology Program (SCATP).

SCATP provides information, resources, and access to assistive technology that can help people with disabilities live, work, learn, and navigate everyday life more independently.

One thing I especially like about this resource is that they offer opportunities to **see and try assistive devices**, including a device loan program. Their resources cover everything from mobility and home modifications to hearing, vision, communication, computers, transportation, and more.

If you are a caregiver, person with a disability, family member, social worker, or other helping professional, this is a resource worth knowing about and sharing.

I offer community-centered discussions designed to help families think ahead about aging parents, changing caregiving roles, home organization, emergency preparedness, important documents, and preparing for future needs.

These aren't lectures. They are practical conversations that give people space to ask questions, reflect on their own situations, and identify steps they can begin taking.

Community councils, neighborhood associations, libraries, faith communities, caregiver groups, senior organizations, and other community-based organizations are welcome to reach out.

Your parents may still be independent. That doesn't mean it's too early to talk about what comes next.

Do you know what your parents want if their health changes?
Would they want to remain in their home?
Who would help manage appointments, medications, finances, or household responsibilities?
Where are their important documents?
And perhaps the hardest question: Has your family actually talked about any of this?

Many families don't begin these conversations until a hospitalization, fall, memory change, or other crisis forces them to.

Planning ahead doesn't mean you're expecting something bad to happen. It means you're giving your family time to make thoughtful decisions instead of rushed ones.

This week, consider starting with one question:
“Mom/Dad, if you ever needed more help, what would you want that to look like?”
You don't have to solve everything in one conversation. But you do need to start.

Sometimes a community resource isn't a program you have to apply for or a service you have to qualify for. Sometimes it's simply knowing what is happening in your community and showing up.

This week, I’m sharing two FREE events happening Saturday, August 15 through Richland Library:

💛 Age Ready: Family Caregiving Essentials

Caregiving can be rewarding, but it can also be stressful and overwhelming. This session will share practical ways to manage caregiving responsibilities while also caring for yourself, including local resources, stress-relief tips, and strategies for staying balanced and supported.

You can attend in person or virtually via Zoom.
