Everybody is busy.

Work. Kids. Bills. Appointments. Errands. Life.

And sometimes months pass before we realize Mom hasn't been getting out as much.
Dad stopped going to his usual activities.
Grandma keeps saying she doesn't want to “bother anybody.”
That older neighbor hasn't been outside lately.

Being busy doesn't mean we don't care.
But sometimes caring needs to make it onto the calendar too.

👉 Your Friday challenge: Think of ONE older adult, caregiver, neighbor, friend, or relative you haven't checked on recently.
Call them.
Visit them.
Invite them for coffee.
Ask a real question and stay around long enough to hear the real answer.
Don't just think about them.
Reach out.

And if you're the person everyone depends on, ask yourself another question:
If something happened to ME, could my family find what they need?

Emergencies don’t always come with a warning, and emergency planning isn’t only about hurricanes or severe weather.

A sudden hospitalization, power outage, house fire, medical emergency, or unexpected change in caregiving can quickly leave a family trying to figure out important information during an already stressful moment.

Community is where preparedness begins. 🧡

This week, I had the opportunity to present “Prepared Before the Crisis: How Community Health Workers Strengthen Community Resilience Through Emergency Preparedness” at the Southeast Community Health Worker Network 2026 Summit.

But what made this experience so meaningful wasn't simply standing beside my poster; it was the conversations happening around it.

I connected with Community Health Workers, Social Workers, and other professionals from communities across the Southeast and beyond. We talked about caregivers, older adults, people with disabilities, transportation, access to resources, emergency planning, and the everyday barriers that can make being prepared much harder for some families than others.

Those conversations reinforced something I deeply believe: prepared communities are connected communities.

Preparedness doesn't always begin with a big emergency plan. Sometimes it begins with a conversation, knowing who to call, organizing important information, identifying a trusted community resource, or simply asking, “What would we do if something happened?”

I left the Summit encouraged by the people I met, the ideas we shared, and the possibilities ahead.

This is only the beginning. 🧡

Prepared before the crisis. Connected before the crisis. Stronger together.

“I want to stay in my own home.”

Many older adults feel strongly about aging in place.
But staying home successfully requires more than simply deciding not to move.
The home has to continue working as needs change.

Can frequently used items be reached safely?
Are pathways clear?
Has clutter created fall risks?
Are medications organized?
Can important documents be found?
Are household routines becoming difficult to manage?

Aging in place should include conversations about how the home will support the person who lives there. Don't wait until a fall or health crisis forces the conversation.

Let's Bring the “What If?” Conversation to Your Community

What if Mom can no longer live alone?
What if the primary caregiver becomes sick?
What if the family has to evacuate?
What if nobody can locate the important documents?

These aren't always comfortable questions, but having the conversations before a crisis gives families more choices.

My community discussions create approachable spaces to talk about caregiving, aging, emergency preparedness, advance care planning, home organization, and the practical realities families face as circumstances change.

The goal isn't to scare people into preparing. It's to help people feel empowered enough to begin.
