Idaho Mountain Guides specializes in teaching rock climbing programs to help climbers succeed at their goals. We work to ensure that after our courses you are able to climb safely on your own. Whether we are teaching at the City of Rocks, the Black Cliffs of Boise, Mount Adams or Aconcagua, we believe you should develop the skills necessary to climb and mountaineer as a lifelong pursuit. Mat Erpelding, owner, has been teaching and guiding rock climbing and mountaineering in Idaho and the western United States since 1995. He is the former Outdoor Program director at Boise State University. Additionally, Mat has guided all over the United States most notably 5 trips guiding and climbing on Denali in Alaska.

At Idaho Mountain Guides, we spend a lot of time climbing, teaching, and guiding at Idaho’s incredible local crags. We believe that being part of the climbing community also means helping take care of the places that make it all possible.
That’s why we’re proud to support the Boise Climbers Alliance and their upcoming Black Cliffs Trail Maintenance Day on October 17!

This is it: our final scheduled public course of the 2026 season.

Trad & Anchor Building runs Saturday, October 17 at Boise's Black Cliffs. In four hands-on hours, you'll learn to place cams and nuts, build anchors that pass the EARNEST test (Equalized, Redundant, No Extension, Strong, Timely), use natural features like trees and boulders, and manage rope at the anchor.

It's ideal for sport climbers ready to branch into trad and for anyone who wants to set up their own top-rope anchors safely. $165 per person, gear included.

Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day. The crags where we teach, from the Black Cliffs to McCall to City of Rocks, sit within the homelands of the Shoshone, Bannock, Paiute and Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) peoples, who have cared for these places far longer than anyone has been climbing on them.

We try to climb as good guests: staying on established trails, packing out everything we bring in, respecting seasonal and cultural closures, and teaching every client to do the same.

Our Outdoor Sport Lead Climbing course on Saturday, October 10 at Boise's Black Cliffs covers it all: leading on bolts, clean clipping technique, fall management, route reading, building and cleaning sport anchors, and safe rappels. It's built for climbers with top-rope experience and gym leaders who are ready to climb independently outside.

4 hours, $165 per person, all technical gear provided. Two-person minimum to run, so grab a partner!

Join Idaho Mountain Guides on October 10 at the Thinking Spot in McCall for a fun, hands-on introduction to outdoor rock climbing!
