A little something I found recently in a Chicago- White Water Division time table of the CCC&STL dated November 10, 1918.
The K&S ran 4 scheduled trains a day Monday through Saturday and 2 scheduled trains on Sunday. Generally the trains that ran in the afternoon were actually the morning train returning with the same crew and locomotive.
Reading and simplifying the special instructions the railroad had the following speed limits outside of yard limits.
40 MPH for passenger trains and 30 MPH for all other trains between Kankakee and Langham.
30 MPH for passenger trains and 20 MPH for all other trains between Langham and Seneca.
15 MPH for trains pulling a steam derrick or engines running backwards.
Since the K&S did not have a dedicated passenger train at this time and only mixed freight / passenger or freight only, trains traveled at the lower of the designated speeds.
If you would like to read the time table in it’s entirely it can be found here,
