March 17 is not only Evacuation Day, but it's St. Patrick's Day, too! Boston is a city whose modern physical and social landscapes are both deeply rooted in Irish culture. Upon immigrating to America, Irish Catholics across the country faced discrimination and poverty, but many didn't know they'd experience this prior to arrival.

Between two stops along the Freedom Trail, Old Corner Bookstore and Old South Meeting House, the Irish Famine Memorial acts as a striking reminder of the An Gorta Mor (The Great Hunger) that struck Ireland in the 1840s and 1850s. When disease struck potato crops, hundreds of thousands of families were left starving and dying from disease. Ignored (and made worse) by the English government and suffering brute and inhumane force from its soldiers families made the impossible (yet common) decision to leave. A mass exodus from Ireland brought thousands to Boston. Upon arrival, they faced new struggles but forged their way.

The 1998 memorial is perhaps an idealized image of the Irish immigrant experience, but is worth examining. The two statues may be the same family on either side of the Atlantic (Ireland and America). The father goes from n**e and hungry to clothed and carrying a sack of potatoes on his back. The mother in Ireland begs God "why?" while the American looks back and reflects on her past.

This St. Patrick's Day, we encourage guests to both celebrate the 19th-century revolutionary history (Evacuation Day) and the 19th-century revolutions that followed—this corner of Washington Street and School Street are the perfect location for just that.

Happy Evacuation Day! Today marks the 250th anniversary of British troops finally leaving Boston. After an 11-month siege of the city, George Washington and the Continental Army fortified Dorchester Heights with cannons from Ticonderoga.

Many sources called this George Washington‘s first victory of the American Revolutionary War. In Boston, it represents resilience after a period of intense struggle and tension since the 1760s. Exemplified by Boston celebrating many of its 250th anniversaries last year and in the years prior, Evacuation Day seemingly marks an “end” to revolutionary activities in Boston… or does it?

On this day 250 years ago, the infamous Boston Massacre permanently changed the trajectory of Boston's future. Tensions had been rising in Boston for years, but trouble had been brewing since 1768 when approximately 2,000 British regulars had been sent to occupy the rebellious city.

Monday, March 5, was a cold, icy evening. A crowd of hundreds had gathered around a sentry, Pvt. Hugh White, near the State House. Young Bostonians yelled and heckled until seven British soldiers, led by Captain Thomas Preston, pushed through the crowds to support White. The men were pelted with rocks, snowballs, ice chunks, oyster shells, and anything the crowd could get its hands on.

Accounts are disputed, but eventually one soldier fired into the crowd without order, prompting the others to follow suit. Three men were instantly killed by the gunfire. Eight others were wounded, two of whom died later from their injuries.

The Boston Massacre, known to to others as the Incident at King Street, is generally considered the first act of violence of the American Revolution. The victims were Crispus Attucks, Samuel Gray, James Caldwell, Patrick Carr, and Samuel Maverick. A later headstone can be found marking their shared grave at the Granary Burying Ground. Known as martyrs, the victims, along with young Christopher Seider (d. February 22, 1770) are buried together beside Samuel Adams and his wife's family.
