The next time you're passing through this unassuming little square in the heart of downtown Boston, take a moment to look at the plaque on one of the buildings.
Two dates stand out: 1766 and 1776.
They mark two pivotal moments in the dramatic story of the American Revolution.
🌳 This is Liberty Tree Square (Liberty Tree Plaza) — the place where, in many ways, the Revolution truly began.
More than 250 years ago, a massive elm tree stood here. Known as the Liberty Tree, it became the gathering place for Bostonians protesting the British Stamp Act. Under its branches, ordinary citizens met, debated, organized, and discovered the power of standing together.
When the Stamp Act was repealed in 1766, the celebration was unforgettable! Nearly 150 lanterns lit up the tree, turning it into a glowing symbol of hope and freedom.
The British understood their power, too. In 1775, they cut the Liberty Tree down, hoping to crush the spirit of the resistance.
Instead, they created a legend.
Across the American colonies, new Liberty Trees began to appear, and the original tree became an enduring symbol of the fight for independence.
Today, only a small plaza and a memorial mark the spot. Thousands of people walk past it every day without realizing that one of the most important chapters of American history began right here.
