I thought I knew what to expect hiking above 15,000 feet. Turns out, I didn’t.
I trained hard for the Salkantay Trek, and I’ve done plenty of multi-day hiking. But this trek still surprised me.
I knew eating would be difficult for me. I didn’t expect my appetite to disappear almost completely. I knew altitude could interfere with sleep. I didn’t expect the insomnia or the incredibly strange dreams. And while taking Diamox, I was surprised by just how dry my mouth, eyes and sinuses felt.
Then, just when we descended and altitude was no longer the issue, the challenge changed. Suddenly it was heat, hydration, different terrain and the cumulative demands of five days on the trail.
That’s one of the things I loved about Salkantay. It kept asking something different of me.
Would I do it again?
In a heartbeat.
This is why I train. 🥾
