How to pick the right credit card to unlock free travel 🧵👇

There’s no one-size-fits-all card
The best travel card for you depends on:

- Where you spend
- Where you want to go
- How often you travel

…and a few other key details.

There are 2 main types of travel cards:

- 🧳General-purpose cards (good for flexible rewards & everyday spenders)
- 💼 Co-branded cards (great for loyalists of a specific airline or hotel chain)

General-purpose cards:
- Good for variety.
- Use points for flights, hotels, or cash back.
- Examples: Chase Sapphire Preferred, Amex Gold.
- Best if you want flexibility & transfer partners.

Co-branded cards:
- Good for loyalty.
- Think Delta Amex, Marriott Bonvoy, etc.
- You’ll earn brand-specific perks like free checked bags, elite status boosts, or hotel upgrades.
- Great if you’re loyal to one airline/hotel.

Other types worth knowing:
- Business travel cards: Higher rewards potential + expense-friendly tools.
- No annual fee cards: Good starter option.
- Premium cards ($500+ fee): Huge perks IF you maximize them.

When comparing cards, look at:
💰 Welcome offer (the biggest short-term gain)
💵 Earning rate (how fast you rack up points)
🌍 Travel perks (like lounge access, TSA PreCheck)
🌐 Transfer partners (to book travel more flexibly)
💸 Fees (annual, foreign transaction, etc.)

A quick decision tree to help you out:

- Want flexibility? → General-purpose card
- Loyal to one airline/hotel? → Co-branded card
- Run a biz? → Business card
- New to points? → No-fee card or intro offer

The card you choose = your travel future
Pick one that aligns with your actual habits, not hype.
Points are powerful—but only if they fit your goals.

---

✅ TL;DR: The best travel card isn’t the most popular.

It’s the one that matches your spending + dream trips.

How to fly internationally for FREE 🚨
Here’s our no-BS intro to points & miles (for total beginners):

Before you do *anything*, understand this:
👉 There are TWO types of travel rewards
✈️ Airline Miles
🏨 Credit Card Points

They sound the same. They’re not.
You can EARN both. You can USE both.
But knowing the difference is where you stop being confused and start flying first class.

What are credit card points?
- Earned from spending on credit cards
- Super flexible: Transfer to airlines/hotels
- Best for beginners

Think of these as the *currency of choice* for travel hackers.

What are airline miles?
- Earned by flying or through airline-branded cards
- Usually stuck with 1 airline
- Great for specific redemptions

You *can* combine miles and points, but it depends on the program.

So how do you earn these magic points and miles?
- Get a travel rewards credit card
- Use it for everyday purchases
- Pay it off IN FULL (we’re not here for debt)
- Watch the points roll in
Most cards give a huge sign-up bonus too (worth hundreds in travel 👀).

Other ways to earn points & miles:
- Use online shopping portals (extra points!)
- Dine at partner restaurants
- Book travel through portals like Amex/Chase
- Refer friends (yes, it pays)

Maximize. Everything.
Double dip whenever you can:
- Book through airline site + use a rewards card
- Stack with shopping portal + loyalty program
You're earning in multiple programs at once.
Like a pro.

Your action items:

✅ Pick a credit card that earns points or miles
✅ Use it for ALL spending
✅ Pay it off monthly
✅ Start tracking your rewards

You don’t need to be rich. You just need to be *intentional*.

💡Pro tip for getting around:
Stay near the Yamanote line (main Tokyo train line) to hit the best spots like Ikebukuro, Shibuya, Ueno, and Tokyo Station. 🚆 Don’t forget to grab a Suica or Pasmo card for easy travel!

🤢 Have allergies?
Only 7 allergens are required by law to be labeled in Japan: eggs, milk, wheat, buckwheat, peanuts, shrimp, and crab

- Bring an allergy card and double-check everything if you're allergic to other foods like soy, corn, or tree nuts
- Use Google Translate to scan menus and ingredient labels
- Look for “allergen-free” labels—not just “gluten-free”
- Use food delivery apps like Uber Eats or Wolt to control ingredients
- Book private tours like Japan by Food or Gluten Free Tours Japan—they can call ahead, order for you, and help with groceries
