Many customers and friends ask us what to do regarding credit cards and airline/hotel elite status. This is our forte at Flightfox, so let's look at a recent question.
Question: I travel a lot for work AND pay for that travel on your own card, what card should I get?
Answer: American Express Platinum card.
Two main reasons:
1. 5x points per $ spent on flights - if you book all of your work travel on the card, you could possibly earn a free RTW business-class flight each year.
2. Instant hotel status - rather than staying 25-50 nights at a single hotel chain to earn status, with this card you get it immediately. That potentially means free breakfast, suite upgrades, late checkout and more.
Here is a guide to all of the benefits of the Amex Platinum card and instructions on how to access those benefits.
- Firstly, this is where you register for the card and read more about the benefits: https://goo.gl/L6aL4S
- Secondly, the benefits of this card are as follows:
* 60,000 bonus points for signup
* Access to Amex Centurion lounges (plus 2 guests for free)
* Access to Delta SkyClubs (normally $450/yr)
* Priority Pass Select for lounge access (worth $399/yr)
* 5x points per $ when booking directly with airlines
* $200 in airline credit for incidentals
* $200 in Uber credit
* Starwood Preferred Guest Gold status (normally 25 nights)
* Marriot Preferred Guest Gold status (normally 50 nights)
* Hilton Honors Gold status (normally 40 nights)
* Avis, Hertz and National elite status
* Global Entry or TSA PreCheck Fee Credit
* Free Boingo Preferred Plan (WiFi at airports)
* American Express Concierge (restaurants & events)
- Lastly, once approved, this is how you access the benefits:
* For 60,000 bonus points: spend $5,000 in 3 months
* For Centurion lounges: just show up with credit card
* For Delta SkyClubs: if flying Delta, show up with credit card
* For Priority Pass: https://goo.gl/Gbr9uR
* For 5x per $: book flights with Flightfox.com or the airline
* For $200 in airline credit: https://goo.gl/qaUxej
* For $200 Uber: add the Amex card in the Uber app
* For Starwood Gold status: https://goo.gl/zuHNyH

* For Hilton Gold status: https://goo.gl/hRqDpE
* For Avis/Hertz/Nat: https://goo.gl/eDBSv2

* For Concierge: https://goo.gl/ysCZjV
Other tips:
* Download LoungeBuddy on your phone so you can find the lounges you can access with this card at any airport. Once you enter this card and your trip into LoungeBuddy, it will show you the closest airport lounges, such as Centurion, Delta or Priority Pass lounges you can access for free.
* Where possible, book Starwood hotels. With your new Gold status, you will often get upgraded and have a much higher chance of late check-out, up to 4pm. If there are no Starwood properties, try Hilton. With Gold status, you’ll get free breakfast and possibly an upgrade too; upgrades are less likely than with Starwood.
* If you go to a lot of events or concerts, register for Amex Concierge for last-minute tickets, even when sold out.
