Dear Friends,
Led by SMA/HDF representative Tendi Sherpa, our relief team has partnered with the Nepal Professional Climbing Association to put your generous support directly into the hands of those who need it most.
Yesterday, our team met with nearly 200 survivors of the devastating floods, providing immediate relief and, just as importantly, letting them know they are not alone. Though many have lost their homes, possessions, livelihoods, and so much of what they spent a lifetime building, through this tragedy they have also gained friends—friends like you.
Your kindness matters.
There is a very long road ahead as we help our Nepalese brothers and sisters recover and rebuild their lives. The needs will continue long after the floodwaters have disappeared and the world's attention has moved elsewhere.
But because of you, that work has already begun.
Your generosity is providing tangible relief, restoring hope, and softening the suffering of families facing an unimaginable loss. We are deeply grateful for the trust you have placed in us to carry your compassion directly to the people of Nepal.

SMA/HDF NEPAL RELIEF EFFORTS
With hands on hearts, thank you. ❤️

Thank you to everyone for the incredible outpouring of concern, support, well wishes, and contributions. Your generosity is already making an impact.

Nearly 500 people displaced by the devastating floods have just arrived in Kathmandu. While they have access to temporary shelter and food, most have lost nearly everything they possessed—homes, livelihoods, personal belongings, and, tragically, in many cases, friends and family. In a largely cash-based economy, many have also lost their life savings.

The needs are immense and deeply personal. People are urgently seeking basic necessities such as diapers, infant formula, medications, feminine hygiene products, clothing, and other essential supplies for themselves and their families.

Our team on the ground in Nepal is already putting the infrastructure in place to ensure that the funds you have contributed can be distributed quickly, responsibly, and with accountability.

Our Boulder colleague, Tendi Sherpa, will arrive within hours and immediately begin helping distribute small amounts of direct assistance to displaced individuals and families who have no resources to fill prescriptions, purchase essential supplies, or meet the immediate needs of their children and loved ones.

This will be a very long journey for those impacted—and for all of us who care. SMA/HDF will continue to post regular updates so you can see how your generosity is helping ease the unimaginable suffering these families have endured and will continue to face in the weeks and months ahead.

SMA’s GoFundMe has now raised nearly $17,000, with more than $20,000 received through direct contributions as well.

When world events feel overwhelming and difficult, it is the kindness of people like you that lights a candle in the darkness.

The devastation that has struck village communities across Nepal and Tibet has broken all of our hearts. This loss of life is staggering. Survivors have lost loved ones, homes, livelihoods, possessions, and in many cases, their work and savings of an entire lifetime. All of this in a matter of moments.

The Nepalese are a people of peace, compassion and generosity. They hang prayer flags in their homes and communities so that the winds may carry wishes of health, happiness and well-being throughout the world, even to people they know they will never meet. Today, the Nepalese people desperately need this same compassion and generosity in return.

This relief fund, initiated by our teammate and guide Michael Leaves, is managed by Sherpa Mountain Adventure’s nonprofit arm, the Himalayan Development Foundation (US). With full transparency and accountability, this effort is overseen by Karma Sherpa, Eric Schulz, and our governing board of directors.

Through SMA’s extensive knowledge of the people, geography and community leaders within the affected regions, our team on the ground will direct 100% of all donations to places where they can have an immediate and meaningful impact. Neither SMA nor the Himalayan Development Foundation will deduct any administrative costs. This we assure you. All contributions are tax-deductible.

Because we can respond with precision and flexibility, SMA has already been working behind the scenes with our in-country colleagues to identify the most effective and efficient ways to deliver immediate assistance directly to those who need it most.

Our Mongolian Gobi Expedition team riding the historic Bactrian camel, the beast of burden throughout the history of the Silk Road! Oh Mongolia!
Bactrian camels are one of the enduring symbols of Mongolia's Gobi Desert and has been an indispensable companion to nomadic people for thousands of years. Easily recognized by its two distinctive humps, this remarkable animal is perfectly adapted to one of the world's harshest environments, where temperatures can range from well below freezing in winter to over 100°F (38°C) in summer.
Unlike the one-humped dromedary camel of the Middle East and North Africa, the Bactrian camel has a thick, shaggy coat that protects it from bitter winter cold and intense desert winds. Its broad, padded feet allow it to walk easily across soft sand and rocky terrain, while its ability to go for days with little water and carry heavy loads made it an essential pack animal along the ancient Silk Road.
Today, domestic Bactrian camels remain an important part of life in the Gobi, providing transportation, milk, wool, and companionship for nomadic families.
