🦁 Where wildlife conservation and community meet — Dete, Zimbabwe.
Dete sits just outside Hwange National Park, and here’s what makes it extraordinary: there is no fence. No border. Wildlife roams freely into the community — including lions.
That means the people of Dete are on the front lines of conservation every single day. When communities like this choose to support wildlife rather than fear it, animals are protected. Lions that venture into the village are safely retrieved and guided back into the park. That only happens when people feel connected to — and supported by — conservation efforts.
This is why programs like the Thandanani Sewing Group matter beyond income. Economic opportunity gives communities a stake in protecting the wildlife they share their land with.
And here’s where you come in …
Each year, Deeper Africa places the Thandanani Group’s largest annual order: handmade travel wallets, sewn from vibrant African cotton fabrics, packaged, and shipped from Zimbabwe to Boulder, Colorado. Every safari household receives one — a beautiful, functional piece made by these women, carried with you on your journey.
