Unlike the Mexican version, Costa Rican tamales are made with a base of corn dough (masa) and are filled with a savory mix of rice, beans, potatoes, and often seasoned meat like chicken, pork, or beef. Theyโre carefully wrapped in banana leaves, tied with string, and steamed perfectly.

Making tamales is a family affair! In many homes, generations come together days before Christmas to prepare dozens (sometimes hundreds!) of tamales, which are then shared with neighbors, friends, and relatives as a symbol of love and unity.
๐ฟ Fun fact: Tamales are often served with hot coffee or traditional holiday drinks like rompope (Costa Rican eggnog).
