Montana Alpine Guides

Montana Alpine Guides MAG, is a permitted rock and ice climbing guide service, also offering education in climbing, backcountry skiing, & avalanche safety.
(1)

Based in Bozeman, Montana, Montana Alpine Guides is the premier guide service for ice climbing in Hyalite Canyon, rock climbing in Gallatin Canyon, the annual Bozeman Ice Festival, guided summits of Gannet Peak, and backcountry ski tours in Hyalite Canyon and Yellowstone National Park. We also run widely respected courses/education for climbing and avalanche safety. We have been operating as a per

mitted climbing guide service since 1985. MAG guides rank in as some of the best in the Rockies with experience guiding from the Himalaya to the Rockies; the AK Range to Patagonia. We regard our surrounding mountains as our second home, our classroom, and our playground. We hope to get the chance to climb with you in Montana!

The transition to spring has us thinking of ski mountaineering days like this guided descent on Gannett Peak back in 2019. To our knowledge this was the first guided ski descent of Wyoming’s highest peak…and unfortunately the last. as the USFS later decided to no longer allow ski guiding on Gannett :(

As we wrap up winter operations we have a private Denali Prep Course, a private Avalanche Course, and a few days of ice climbing.
If you and your partners are interested in ski mountaineering, crevasse rescue,or guided days we will continue operating until April 15th this season.

Always a pleasure to guide Cleopatra’s Needle! As the warm temps keep climbing we will pull away from climbs that get a lot of sun and focus more on the many shady climbs in the canyon such as neighboring Twin Falls linked into Palace Butte climbs.
-
If you’re still keen to ice climb there’s ice to be climbed.

Gotta love March in Montana! Powder skiing one day, ice climbing the next, and the occasional sunny rock climb. The ice remains fat and plentiful this year despite the record warmth. As we draw closer to the end of March we climb more in the early mornings and in the shade. Fortunately there’s plenty of climbs in the shade.
-
This is also a great time of year to link up with us for the Hyalite Trifecta: Ski Mt Blackmore, climb ice in the main canyon, and end the day rock climbing at Practice Rock!

Do you have your eye on some ski mountaineering objectives?
MAGs annual Ski Mountaineering Course in Cooke City will take place March 21-23. Skiers and riders will gain the skills and knowledge needed to plan, assess, and ski more technical objectives that may require ropes, crampons, snow anchors, rappelling, belaying and more.

Current conditions in Hyalite are looking great for our upcoming Intermediate Ice Course on 2/28 & 3/1 with senior MAG guide Adam Knoff.
-
Adam has been climbing in Hyalite, establishing first ascents locally and beyond, and guiding for over 25 years. Add to that he has a natural talent for teaching and you are looking at the ideal ice course for steep ice techniques, learning to lead, analyzing ice, and more.
-
We have two spots remaining and 1 spot in the multi pitch bonus day the Monday following the course.
-
Other upcoming Courses:
⛷️ Avalanche Rescue Course (3/7)
🏔️ Crevasse Rescue Course (3/14)
🏔️ Ski Mountaineering Course (3/21-3/23) in Cooke City

Come climb with us near Cooke City! High elevation and north aspects allow us to guide here November 15-April 15 each year. Route options consist of moderate single pitch to multi-pitch steep ice.
-
Our ideal Cooke teip involves 2-3 days of ice climbing mixed in with 2-3 days of backcountry skiing.

Plenty of time to get some ice climbing in this winter! It’s Monday February 2nd and we still have 2 months to ice climb in Hyalite Canyon. Our operations near Cooke City will continue into mid April at higher elevations while our Cody trips tend to slow down mid March.

While legal immigration is something all nations have, we crossed way over the line. We stand in agreement with protestors that ICE has no place terrorizing, imprisoning, and killing citizens on our streets.
-
To support the nation wide protest we will not be taking any business today. Our office will be closed. The two ice climbing trips that were reserved months ago will still take place out of respect to those climbers and our guides.

One of the beauties of Hyalite is that we have both the easy access cragging days and long more remote multi-pitch options all in within a 2 mile stretch. At the crags and the multi-pitch spots we have beginner to advanced options. For those looking for a more remote experience you can always walk a little further up East Hyalite, Flanders, Maid of the Mist, etc.
-
Photo: Good day of easy access to hard cragging prior to a day with a longer approach to a moderate 4-pitch classic.
