Summer gets the crowds. Christmas gets the lights. But locals will tell you the truth: Fall is when the Ozarks show off.

Sometime in October, these hills catch fire. Not literally, but you'd swear it from a distance. Oak, hickory, maple, and sumac turn the ridgelines into a hundred shades of amber and crimson, and suddenly every winding road out of Branson becomes the most scenic drive (boating) you've done all year. The air turns crisp enough for flannel but stays warm enough for the lake. Kettle corn and woodsmoke replace sunscreen as the official scent of town.

Peak color usually hits mid-to-late October, and it does not wait for procrastinators. Neither do fall weekends in Branson. 🍁

Twenty two years ago, Kelly Parrish had never heard of Branson, Missouri. Not "heard of it and wasn't interested." Had genuinely never heard the word.

She was a young performer from a small town two hours south of Chicago, doing print work and commercials, chasing whatever audition came next. Then a friend called with a strange pitch. A show in Branson needed a dancer, and she should come try out. Kelly's honest response, word for word, was "What's Branson?"

She drove down with her mom anyway, because that's apparently how you make life decisions in your twenties. She auditioned. She got the job. And then came the fine print nobody warned her about. This wasn't a summer gig. If she wanted it, she had to move to Branson full time.

She moved.

What followed was a career nobody could have written on purpose. Dancing in Jimmy Osmond's American Jukebox. Touring the country with the beloved show Red Hot and Blue. Eventually landing at Number One Hits of the 60s and More, where she's now spent 11 years, met her husband, and raised her kids.

So the next time someone tells you they have no idea what they're doing with their life, maybe don't worry too much. Kelly didn't even know what state she was moving to.

Come see where "What's Branson?" ended up. Catch Kelly on stage at the Clay Cooper Theater. Buy Tickets from our partner: https://ibranson.com/shows-in.../1-hits-of-the-60s-2/

Branson has never been better! Do you know how it all started?

Ruben S. Branson, for whom Branson, Missouri, is named, was one of thirteen children. He opened a general store near the White River. In 1882, the store added a post office, officially listing it as Branson, Missouri. After selling his store, he opened a distillery and boarding house while helping to govern the town. Eventually, interest in Branson as a community surged when the railroad was announced. In 1904, a new bank, a hotel, and a stable were opened. A new school district was organized the following year as the railroad's completion continued attracting new residents. Reuben Branson lived to see the town grow some but passed away in 1935.

The Presley family built the first theater in 1967. Not long after, the Baldknobbers built a theater nearby in 1969. Today, Branson is home to over 40 music theaters with over 50,000 seats (more than Broadway). The Baldnobbers are even around and still doing wonderful shows. There are also dozens of attractions and other entertainment that is unlike anything in the country.

25% of the country can get to Branson within a Day’s drive.

The Presleys were an Ozark family who played the underground stages of the Missouri hills. Folks from all over would pack the caves to hear their legendary family performances—so many, in fact, that the caverns couldn’t hold ’em anymore.

So, the Presleys left the caves and bought themselves a piece of land on an isolated two-lane stretch of asphalt just outside town (aka HWY 76, the Strip). It wasn’t long after that when their show opened in a brand-new theater.

The Presleys' Country Jubilee is still rocking if you visit.
