in 1972, Louis Victorino and his wife Doreen returned to his homeland of São Miguel island many years later. While there, the two fell in love with the island’s culture, landscape, cuisine and kind people. While visiting the beautiful town of Greve in Chianti, Italy, I came across the impressive statue of the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano. In our area, we are very familiar with this great explorer, whose name is closely tied to the history of exploration and discovery.

Located in the heart of Greve’s main square, Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, this bronze monument was sculpted by Romeo Pazzini and inaugurated in 1913. It stands proudly as a tribute to Verrazzano, who helped expand Europe’s understanding of the North American coastline.

It’s always fascinating to encounter a piece of history so closely connected to home while traveling abroad. 🇮🇹🌎
