The Erie Canal at 200 ( #18): Continuing my weekly series here on the page commemorating the bicentennial of the iconic Erie Canal. A unique footbridge, the Brockport Loop Pedestrian Bridge, is nearing completion over the Erie Canal. A dedication will be held there on June 13th at 11:00am. This winding bridge that, from a distance has waterslide vibes, will connect SUNY Brockport with the Empire State Trail along the canal. This will allow students to cross the canal there and walk the trail into the village. This is being built under New York State’s Reimagine the Canals Initiative. The project has been funded in part by the New York Power Authority, which has committed to $300 million across the whole initiative, and a $2 million dollar grant by the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation. Further east from this spot, work continues on the Brockport Lift Bridge rehabilitation. That’s a completely separate project that has been delayed due to supply chain issues. The 2025 Erie Canal season begins on May 16th—celebrating 200 wonderful years.
