The Erie Canal at 200 ( #18): Continuing my weekly series here on the page commemorating the bicentennial of the iconic Erie Canal. A unique footbridge, the Brockport Loop Pedestrian Bridge, is nearing completion over the Erie Canal. A dedication will be held there on June 13th at 11:00am. This winding bridge that, from a distance has waterslide vibes, will connect SUNY Brockport with the Empire State Trail along the canal. This will allow students to cross the canal there and walk the trail into the village. This is being built under New York State’s Reimagine the Canals Initiative. The project has been funded in part by the New York Power Authority, which has committed to $300 million across the whole initiative, and a $2 million dollar grant by the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation. Further east from this spot, work continues on the Brockport Lift Bridge rehabilitation. That’s a completely separate project that has been delayed due to supply chain issues. The 2025 Erie Canal season begins on May 16th—celebrating 200 wonderful years.

Village of Brockport New York Forward: Local Planning Committee Meeting

The Village of Brockport was selected as one of the Finger Lakes region’s recipients of a $4.5 million NY Forward grant. NY Forward is a statewide initiative that provides funding for high priority projects designed to boost local economies and transform village centers where the next generation of New Yorkers will want to live, work, and raise a family.

The first of several monthly meetings with the Local Planning Committee will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at 5:30 PM at the Brockport Village Court, located at 49 State Street, Brockport, NY 14420.

The Local Planning Committee is tasked with guiding the NY Forward planning process for the Village of Brockport and participating in project identification and evaluation to ultimately recommend a slate of projects to the State for funding consideration. During this meeting the Local Planning Committee will learn more about the NY Forward planning process and participate in a visioning session that will help to establish a vision framework to guide their decision-making.

This meeting is open to all members of the public, with time reserved at the end of the meeting for public comment.

The Village of Brockport is committed to hosting open, inclusive, and accessible meetings. To request an accommodation or for inquiries about accessibility, please contact Leigh Ann Kimber at [email protected].

The Brockport Welcome Center features two handicapped accessible bathrooms with showers, a coin operated laundry, an information room and lounge with free coffee, cable television, computer, printer and Wi-Fi. Eleven pedestals can accommodate a total of twenty-one tie-ups with dockside water and electric, only steps from picnic tables and grills. A low-level landing for canoes and kayaks makes a welcome site for those who choose to paddle to Brockport. A Fixit Bike Repair Station with a pump will help get bike enthusiasts back on the trail. An EV charge station is available to charge two vehicles at a time. Eight adult and three children’s bikes are free to borrow.

The Brockport Welcome Center is staffed by community volunteers seven days a week, mid-May through October to coincide with the dates the canal is open. When a greeter is available, we are open 8 am – 8 pm. Contacts are listed on our door if you come when we are closed. The Greeters will give you access to the facilities, help orient you to our community, and answer any questions you have.
