You go for a swim. You come back. Your lounger towels have been redone, because the beach butler saw sand on them.

Nobody asked. That’s just JOIA Paraiso.

The numbers first, for anyone shortlisting:

✨ Full access to the 4 Iberostar family resorts next door. Their restaurants, their pools, their night shows, and that literal jungle in the middle of Paraiso Beach and Del Mar

Style wise it’s old luxury. Sistine-chapel style ceiling murals, marble columns, red carpets. Two oceanfront buildings that are literally on the beach, not behind a mangrove. And it’s genuinely tropical: coatis, agoutis, peacocks, iguanas, and a monkey that drinks from the pool sometimes.

None of that is why it’s been a repeat top-seller for me for years. It’s the people. The oceanfront butlers will talk to you in the mornings. Ask what you need. How you slept. There’s no Preferred Club concept here, so nobody gets the lesser version of the resort. It’s smaller, fewer rooms, and you feel that as personal attention.

I proposed here, and I’ve been back over 2 dozen times. Newer resorts look more luxurious on Instagram. JOIA FEELS warmer. More local. Classic.

This past Tuesday night, at around 11 p.m., I was sitting there watching a flight I wasn't on.

One of my families was coming home from a week at Disney. Orlando to Newark. Thunderstorms had been sitting on Newark since the afternoon and nothing was getting out. They boarded. Deplaned. Sat at the gate. After a full Disney week. Delayed. Delayed. Delayed. Delayed. Five and a half hours of it.

And I watched every minute.

Here's what those hours feel like from the gate. Everybody's exhausted. Your phone keeps buzzing with a new departure time that's later than the last one. And at some point you just go: man, this sucks. What is even happening right now?

With me, you don't sit in that alone. You text me. And I come right back with: listen, here's what I see because Flighty keeps me updated (thanks guys!) Don't you worry. Because if the crew times out and this plane doesn't go tonight, I've got hotels by the airport ready. If you say screw it, we're driving, I've done that drive, I'll have a rental car lined up. If this, or this, or this happens ... I got you. Whatever they'd have picked, there was a plan for it. Mostly because I have done that exact trip tons of times. I’ve driven back because my flight got cancelled. I’ve pivoted to Philadelphia. I’ve been cancelled on last minute and needed a last minute hotel.

They took off at 11:13pm for their 5pm flight. Landed in Newark a little after 2 in the morning. Almost six hours late, but home. And the whole way there, somebody was on the other end of the text.

That's the real thing I do. Not just the resort pick. Not the itinerary. Being THERE at 11 p.m. when it goes sideways, so the worst night of the trip isn't one you to sit through by yourself.

There isn't a single booking website in the world that's going to do that. But a good agent will be just as worried about your delayed flight as you.

Every clip in this video was sent to me this week by a family I booked.

Not one of them mentioned their kitchen.

Here’s the thing about the house: it is never done. There is always one more accent wall, one more room, one more deck, one more quote, one more spring that would be a better time to start. Meanwhile the kids get a year older and the countertops stay exactly where they are.

You are allowed to spend the renovation money on a week your kids will still be describing in ten years.

Latest sargassum map from the Secretaría de Ecología y Medio Ambiente de Quintana Roo is up!

It seems the Riviera Maya is making a come back after being abused by the sargassum this entire season, with the hotel zone in Cancun getting most of it currently.

As always keep in-mind that green doesn’t mean no sargassum. And this map is based on sargassum patterns in the ocean and not what may be laying on the beach at your resort.

Sometimes the most budget-friendly thing you can do is lay on the beach at an all-inclusive resort.

No Uber Eats charges. No “quick” Target run that turns into $180. No dinner bill. No bar tab. No tipping screen spinning around at you every four hours.
