Paradisus Cancun just came back from a $50 million renovation, and if you have kids, look at what they built for the children BEFORE you even think about the rooms.

PARENTS: there’s a full kids zone with its own dining space, murals, colorful playrooms, an outdoor play deck with animal stools, and a giant teddy bear in the atrium. This is not a corner of the lobby with a few toys. It’s a designed environment built to actually keep kids busy.

The lobby atrium also got a serious glow-up. Tall glass ceiling, hanging greenery, a fountain, curved balconies. Honestly one of my favorite lobbies right now across over 100 resorts on this coast.

Who this is for: families who want a resort that visually holds the kids’ attention from the second you walk in, not just the pool.

Who it’s probably not for: couples or adults-only travel. Paradisus Cancun is built around families, and this renovation doubled down on that.

If you’re planning a family all-inclusive in Cancun and you haven’t put this on your radar yet, this is the post that should change that.

Excellence Playa Mujeres or Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres. Most couples assume it’s the same resort with a new name. It’s two totally different vibes.

Coral is for couples who want it quiet and intimate.
The original is for couples who want it active and social, with more activities and more entertainment.

Coral is not for couples who want a busy pool scene.
The original is not for couples who want quiet.

Coral opened February 12, 2025, built from the ground up. 168 of its suites come with a private pool.
Excellence Club guests at Coral get Whisper, a speakeasy that seats just 10 guests at a time.
The original has a lazy river, a swim-up off every ground-floor suite, nightly shows, and silent disco and Mexican party nights.
Both are adults only, a few minutes apart in the same Playa Mujeres community.

The tradeoff at Coral: four of its seven pools sit in the Excellence Club area, so skip the club and you’re sharing only three pools.

Save this for when you’re choosing between the two.

🌴 Same beach. Same resort. Two different years and two VERY different experiences.

This is a perfect example of just how dramatically beaches in the Riviera Maya can change!

📍 Hyatt Vivid Playa del Carmen

The two photos on the right were taken in March 2025. Beautiful stretches of white sand, turquoise water, and plenty of room to enjoy the beach.

The photo on the left? That’s TODAY, October 7, 2026.

Quite the difference, right?!

Here’s something I always remind my clients: The beaches throughout Cancun and the Riviera Maya are constantly changing.

Weather, waves, currents, seasonal conditions, and coastal erosion can all impact how much beach is actually there. A resort with a beautiful, wide stretch of sand one month might look completely different several months later.

And sometimes, those beaches recover just as dramatically!

It’s also why I caution people against judging a resort’s beach solely by photos or reviews from a particular point in time.

After more than 20 years of traveling throughout the Mexican Caribbean and personally staying at 115+ all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, one thing I’ve learned is that beach conditions are never guaranteed.

This doesn’t necessarily mean a resort has a bad beach. It means Mother Nature has a say in your vacation, too! 🌊

Families ask me if Iberostar Paraiso Maya is worth it for the restaurants. But the restaurants are NOT the reason.

The reason is the actual rooms. At Maya, the standard room is a junior suite. At Lindo, it’s smaller.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Maya is perfect for families who want that junior suite as the base, not an upgrade.
🛗 Plus for anyone who’d rather skip the stairs: every Maya room building has elevators, and Lindo’s don’t.
🌧️ For rainy days: covered walkways at Maya get you to the lobby and almost every restaurant dry.

Not for anyone upgrading just for dinner. The food is great across the whole complex.

Maya guests eat at Lindo, Beach, and Del Mar.
Lindo guests eat at Beach and Del Mar, plus La Geisha and El Rancho at Maya with a reservation.
L’Etoile and La Marina stay Maya’s.
Lindo and Maya share the big pool and the waterpark.
Most of the time Lindo is the better price. Sometimes Maya is cheaper, so I always check both.

Save this for the night you’re comparing the two.
Send it to whoever is planning the family trip this year.

RIU Palace Peninsula went through a major glow-up, reopening at the end of July this year. I didn't want to share another post with renders, but today our team finally got a chance to get over there and see the renovations first-hand and WOW.

RIU has really done a great job with all of their latest redesigned properties, and they gave this 14+ year old resort a huge upgrade.

Most people like to pick the resort first and the beach second. BUT these are 8 Mexican Caribbean beaches I would PICK FIRST!

Want quiet? Xpu-Ha and Playa Maroma.
Want energy around you? The Cancun Hotel Zone.
Want something under the water? Akumal.
Want an island beach vibe? Holbox or Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres.
Want a view with history? Tulum.
Want calm with Cancun close by? Costa Mujeres.

Pick the beach. Then I’ll match the resort to it.

So many people call the Cancun Hotel Zone overrated. Sure, it isn’t for everyone.

But those views 🤩
That ocean 🌊
All those shades of turquoise blue 😍

I will absolutely never get sick of these views.

If you want the beach, restaurants and beach clubs all within reach, this is your spot. If you want quiet, I’ll point you somewhere calmer. Not overrated. Just not for everyone.
