The "Steeplechase Funny Face" was created by George Tilyou, the creator of Steeplechase Park in Coney Island. It was introduced in 1897 when the park opened. Steeplechase was Coney's most successful and long-lived of all its amusement parks and the face hung above the entrance. It was designed to be a symbol of the park's underlying theme of fun and laughs. It underwent numerous revisions during the park's run and, over the years, has become synonymous with Coney Island itself.

TRIVIA QUESTION: What is the connection between this symbol and the similar looking Tillie smiley face in Asbury Park?

It was 14 years ago today, on May 4, 2012, when we lost Adam Yauch to cancer. He was only 46 years old. A founding member of the Beastie Boys, he was known as MCA. He was the only member of the band from Brooklyn, having been born and raised in Brooklyn Heights. As he rapped in the song “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” which has become our anthem, “Born and bred in Brooklyn, USA. They call me Adam Yauch, but I'm MCA.” Those of us from Brooklyn who grew up listening to the Beastie Boys will always have a special place in our hearts for Adam.

74 years ago today (April 30, 1952), Mr Potato Head became the first toy advertised on television. It was the first time that advertisers, in this case Hasbro, targeted their ads to children, not adults. It helped Hasbro sell more than one million units the first year, making their innovative campaign a roaring success. By the way, Mr Potato Head was invented by George Lerner in Brooklyn in 1949. He would often take potatoes from his mother's garden and, using various fruits and vegetables as facial features, he'd make dolls for his younger sisters to play with. He sold his creation to Hasbro, and the rest is history. And just like George's creation, the first version of Mr Potato Head by Hasbro only featured the body parts. Kids needed to use a real potato for the body.

April 17 is recognized by the City of New York as Giovanni da Verrazzano Day! It was established to honor the Italian explorer who became the first European to sail into the Narrows in Brooklyn and discover New York Harbor. Historians had originally credited Henry Hudson as the first to sail the Narrows. Verrazzano did it 502 years ago today on April 17, 1524. He anchored his ship, La Dauphine, in the area now spanned by the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. The bridge, which connects the boroughs of Brooklyn and Staten Island, was named in his honor.

The late Chuck Connors was born in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn on this day in 1921. He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help grammar school, where he was also an altar boy, and graduated from Adelphi Academy. Best known as the star of "The Rifleman" on TV from 1958 to 1963, he was also one of only 12 athletes in the history of American professional sports to have played in both Major League Baseball (for the Dodgers) and the National Basketball Association (for the Celtics).

On this day in 1913, the first official baseball game was played at Ebbets Field in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn! The Brooklyn Dodgers played the Philadelphia Phillies with Brooklyn losing 1-0. The Dodgers would go on to win lots of other games, and make history, at Ebbets Field including the first televised baseball game against Cincinnati in 1939 and Jackie Robinson running onto the field in 1947 and breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball.⚾️
