Why does Riverside Drive curve so much? 🌳🏙️

Unlike Manhattan’s famous grid system, Riverside Drive follows the natural contours of the land along the Hudson River. Designed in the late 1800s as part of a grand parkway, its winding route was intentional—created to offer beautiful river views, preserve the landscape, and make the journey itself part of the experience.

As you walk through the Upper West Side, you’ll notice how the gentle curves, grand apartment buildings, and tree-lined sidewalks feel completely different from the rigid straight lines found elsewhere in Manhattan. It’s one of the neighborhood’s most charming reminders that New York City wasn’t built all at once—it evolved around the geography that was already here.

Have you ever noticed how different this stretch of Manhattan feels compared to the rest of the city?

Before elevators, where you lived in NYC often depended on how many flights of stairs you were willing to climb.

In the 1800s, the most desirable apartments were on the lower floors. The higher you lived, the less you paid—because carrying groceries, water, and everything else up several flights was a daily challenge.

Then came the elevator.

Suddenly, everything changed. Upper floors became the most coveted addresses in the city. Better views, more sunlight, less street noise, and a new level of luxury transformed how New Yorkers lived. The invention of the elevator didn’t just change buildings—it reshaped the city’s social hierarchy and skyline.

Today, you can still spot the difference. Older walk-up buildings tell the story of pre-elevator New York, while elevator buildings reflect the city’s evolution into the vertical metropolis we know today.

Next time you step into a NYC elevator, remember: you’re riding a piece of history that changed the city forever.

One of the easiest ways to understand NYC? Look at the markets.

Neighborhoods tell their story through what they sell.
A block filled with gluten-free specialty groceries, organic cafés, and boutique markets usually points to a wealthier area. Walk into a neighborhood with kosher bakeries, Judaica shops, and kosher supermarkets, and you’re likely in a strong Jewish community. Seafood markets, live poultry shops, Russian delis, halal butchers, Asian produce stands, every storefront reflects the people who live there.

In New York City, markets survive because neighborhoods support them. They evolve with the culture, immigration, traditions, and daily lives of the people nearby. The streets, smells, menus, and grocery aisles become a map of the community itself.

This is one of the reasons NYC Explained Tours loves exploring local neighborhoods, because every market tells a deeper story about identity, history, and how New Yorkers live today.

One of the best ways to understand NYC is by noticing how the city constantly evolves. What used to be old horse stables on the Upper West Side is now home to the Stephen Gaynor School. A perfect example of how New York reinvents itself while still preserving pieces of its past.

A true Upper West Side classic 🐟🥯✨ Murray’s Sturgeon Shop has been part of NYC’s food culture since 1947, serving some of the city’s best smoked fish, bagels, spreads, and traditional Jewish appetizing favorites.

What makes Murray’s so unique is that it’s one of the last remaining old-school appetizing stores in New York City a tradition brought by Jewish immigrants that became part of the city’s culinary identity. Walking inside feels like stepping back into vintage NYC, where everything is hand-prepared with decades of tradition behind it.

And the food? Absolutely unforgettable. From silky nova lox to rich whitefish salad and perfectly fresh bagels, every bite tastes like classic New York. 💙

There’s something about stepping into Barzini’s that feels like old New York never left. 🇮🇹

Before the city became a playground of big chains and polished grocery aisles, neighborhoods like the Upper West Side had their own corner markets, family-run spots filled with imported pasta, olive oil, and the kind of cheeses you don’t rush picking. Italian markets weren’t just places to shop… they were part of daily life, part of community.

Today, NYC looks different. Sleeker, faster, more uniform. But places like Barzini’s still hold their ground, stacked shelves, familiar faces, and that unmistakable feeling of you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.

A little slice of Italy, still alive in the middle of Manhattan. 🍝
