Heart of the Art NYC

Heart of the Art NYC We offer customized, private tours and parties at New York City art museums and galleries.

Your guide, Emily Sachar, is an art historian, educator, public speaker and party planner who is an instant hit with students of all ages. She is intimately familiar with the holdings, exhibition schedules and layout of all of New York City’s museums and can speed you to the art you most want to see (she’ll also zip you to the most convenient restrooms and eating facilities). Emily deploys her iPa

d to augment your custom, private tour with videos, maps, photos and other materials to give you the sharpest insights, and socio-political context, into the art on view. An independent art historian on the faculty at New York University and Hunter College, Emily is also a senior docent and art educator at the Brooklyn Museum and a former docent at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has led more than 500 art tours in the past 12 years and has lived in New York City for 34 years. She enjoys art in any locale, from a Chelsea gallery to an outdoor sculpture park, from the altar of a church to the galleries of a major museum. Emily studied for her masters in art history at The City University of New York/Hunter College. Her MA research focused on the use of codes and symbols to signal an interest in homosexuality by the Magic Realists, a group of American artists who worked at the middle of the 20th century. Emily graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in economics and American history. Esteemed by guides, educators and visitors around the world, Emily, a former journalist, is a researcher par excellence who is equally at home with Ancient Egypt and contemporary art. Emily is also a poet who hears the world in rhyme, a skill she discovered in fifth grade. As a New York City public school teacher, Emily taught eighth-grade math for one year almost exclusively in impromptu rap; her students' standardized test scores skyrocketed. Today, Emily deploys her talent to whip up clues about the art on view in New York City museums, making Heart of the Art scavenger hunt parties a visual and aural delight! Whether you're partying or seeking a custom, private New York City museum, our goal is to help you dive in, look close, learn and.....Get to the Heart of the Art!

"Emily gave us a very rich and fascinating tour of the Frida Kahlo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. In about an hour she led as through the galleries, deftly choosing stops which gave us the overall picture as well as a wealth of detailed information which revealed the depth of her knowledge and her enthusiasm for this artist. It was a very satisfying experience which felt very personal as she was so interested in our reactions and used them as a springboard to supply more information and to further engage us. I also was impressed with her ability to seamlessly respond to others, who after overhearing what she was telling us, asked further questions. She didn't make them feel like intruders on our tour but rather that she was happy to have them also be interested. I can't say enough about Emily's skills as a guide to enjoying art, or to recommend her as a guide to enjoying art." ~ Ellen Glass

Kehinde Wiley's iconic Napoleon Leading the Army over the Alps (2005) painting is now on view alongside its original inspiration, Jacques-Louis David's Bonaparte Crossing the Alps (1800-1), in a new exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. The show pits the artists' two impactful works against each other to explore "how ideas of race, masculinity, representation, power, and agency have played out across the history of Western portraiture."

If you want an informative focused tour through these enormous collections with someone who knows their stuff, I highly recommend visiting them with Emily. Thank you Emily - for 2 unforgettable days!" ~ Chris Keller

February 17th is the opening of the wonderful muralism show "Vida Americana: Mexican Muralists Remake American Art, 1925-1945" at the Whitney Museum of American Art. There will be approximately 200 works of art by 60 Mexican and American artists. This exhibition reorients art history by revealing the profound impact the Mexican muralists had on their counterparts in the United States during this period. It will also demonstrate ways in which their example inspired American artists both to create epic narratives about American history and everyday life, and to use their art to protest economic, social, and racial injustices.

Florine Stettheimer (1871-1944) was an artist, set designer, and poet, who was unabashedly proud of her unconventional "Family Portrait, II" (1933), which she frequently referred to as "my masterpiece." Family Portrait, II depicts herself and her family in the 1930s Manhattan salon, where she entertained her family and a close circle of artists, critics, and curators, exhibiting her work and sharing her poems. This piece is on display in the David Geffen Wing at the MoMA.

An exhibition of The Migration Series (1940-41) at the MoMa (https://mo.ma/3863SXC) by American artist Jacob Lawrence (b. 1917) brings together the entire, sixty-panel work for the first time in more than twenty years. This epic series dramatically depicts the post-World War I migration of African-Americans from the rural South to the industrial North.
