EL TORO GUERO SAN JOSE DEL CABO. Located just off of Centenario (the back street of downtown San Jose del Cabo), El Toro Guero is a great local restaurant for seafood and more with valet parking. El Toro is a large open room covered by a palapa with flags from around the world at top of the walls as well as advertisements for their food. The restaurant is usually quite full with a combination of locals and expat residents. You know it is a good place when you see two of your favorite chefs there for dinner with their families on the same day as you go - Ulises from La Vaca Tinta and Chive from District MX.

We were led to a table for four and given the menu, which is extensive offering every type of seafood on tostadas, in shells, in tacos, in ceviche, in cocktails and in salads and soups. There are lots of special shrimp dishes, fish fillets with almost any type of sauce you can imagine as well as house specialties. The menu has been expanded to include chicken and meat dishes as well as a kid's menu.

We ordered our drinks and we were served a basket of tortilla chips with a plate of Pico de Gallo, which included cucumber and a salsa to nibble on while we decided on our meals. I ordered some marlin paté as an appetizer as well, which was served with tostadas and crackers. The portions of the main courses are very large as they are accompanied by salad, mashed potatoes and rice. Tracey decided on the grilled tuna medallions, Beth chose the grilled shrimp with tomatoes, onions and green peppers, Chris decided on the seafood burrito served with French fries and I ordered the filet of fish with mushroom sauce. The portions were huge, the flavors very good, and we had lots left to take home.

Beth absolutely loves the pineapple ice cream and would come to El Toro Guero just for that. They empty a pineapple and then fill it with pineapple ice cream and put it in the freezer. There was one left and so we shared it for dessert. It is always at treat.

The food is very good, the service great, a festive local atmosphere with wandering mariachis and all at a very reasonable price.

A HIDDEN GEM IN CABO SAN LUCAS MARIA JIMENEZ RESTAURANTE MEXICANO. Located Calle Narcizo Mendoza Entre Revolucion de 1910 y 20 in Cabo San Lucas, Maria Jimenez Restaurante Mexicano was founded in 2012 to fulfill the dream of Maria Jimenez and her husband. He quit his job at another restaurant in Cabo San Lucas to start it and unfortunately, died three months later of a brain aneurism. Maria determined to fulfill their dream pushed forward but she contracted cancer. Despite this, she opened in the space that it now their bar, with the stove, refrigerator and dishes from their home. In 2014, they opened the current space beside it under a large palapa, designed by Maria. The design included adobe walls to remind her and her children of where they were from on mainland Mexico. Maria Jimenez passed in 2015. The restaurant is now run by her three daughters and her son, with a commitment to continue to fulfill the dream of their family.

The atmosphere is truly Mexican and the menu reflects all of the traditional dishes of Mexico - appetizers, salads, soups, quesadillas, enchiladas, tacos, chile relleno, fajitas, chicken, arrachera, sopes, Mexican combination platters, seafood platters, and of course, desserts. While were reviewing the menu, we were severed a special small bean tart appetizer that we had seen being grilled at the entrance to the bar when we arrived.

There were seven us for dinner. Three of us decided to try the soups on the menu as the first course. Beth chose the corn soup, Tracey the tortilla soup and I selected the onion soup. All were served in large brightly-colored Mexican bowls. The flavors were excellent. Three people chose the Flautas de Polllo as the main course, which was served with refried beans, rice and guacamole. Jerry decided on Chicken with Mole, Chris the beef Fajitas and I chose the Breaded Chicken. Tracey ordered the Shrimp Al Gusto with garlic and butter. Each was served with rice, beans and guacamole and three additional salsas were provided to the table. All of the portions were large (in fact, several of us took lots home for another meal).

We were all very happy with our meals but we were convinced to share some of their desserts. Three different desserts appeared on the table - an apple strudel; a chocolate cake and a traditional flan. The strudel and cake came with vanilla ice cream and all had slices of apple on the colorful Mexican plates. Once again, the flavors were amazing.

Maria Jimenez Restaurante is truly a hidden gem with amazing food, great service from the family and staff and a true Mexican atmosphere. While a little off the beaten path, it is a restaurant that should not be missed.

GELATERIA DEL TUTTI PLAZA DEL PESCADOR. After a great meal at Latino 8, Chris, Tracey and Beth really wanted some ice cream for dessert. We walked along Plaza del Pescador and saw that in the back corner of the small plaza beside Bistro by Sebastien Agnes was a small ice cream stand. The cooler display at the front of the stand offered 18 different flavors of ice cream ranging from traditional vanilla and chocolate to Bailey's, Coffee, Peanut Butter, Pistachio, Cookies and Cream, Cheesecake and more. The three eyed the display, made their selections and loved the ice cream.

LA BARRICA TAPAS AND WINE. Located in the Koral Center on the corridor between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas is a relatively new restaurant La Barrica Tapas and Wine. The restaurant has seating both inside and outside in the upper plaza of the Mercado. We chose an outside table and Valeria, our server provided us with menus and asked what we would like to drink. Chris chose a local Bohema beer, I ordered a glass of their special sauvignon blanc and the ladies had a limonada mineral and water.

The restaurants wine and menu are inspired by traditional Spanish dishes. Valeria brought us two small bowls of olives and cheese with toothpicks to nibble while reviewing the menu. The menu includes a number of tapas - Pan Tomate, Anchovies, Smoked Salmon and more - three salads, a number of appetizers - croquestas, shrimp meatballs, clams rockefeller - main courses - shrimp, New York steak, chicken, Angus medallions, paella and a hamburger and desserts.

I decided to try one of their tapas - the smoked salmon - and Beth ordered the Caesar salad (without the parmesan cheese) as appetizers. For the main course, Chris chose the hamburger. Tracey selected the House Salad with mixed organic greens, feta cheese, olives, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, beet, mixed berries and served with honey and citric dressing. Beth ordered the Shrimp Tempura fried and served with house mayonnaise and roasted nuts. I decided on the Solomillo - Angus medallions served with cheese and tomato creamed rice.

For dessert we decided to try the Churros mixed with cinnamon and sugar served with vanilla icecream, chocolate sauce and compote. The five warm churros were served in a small La Barrica Cart placed on the table. Very novel and very good.

The flavors of all of the dishes were excellent. The chef, Ivan Alvarez had done an amazing job. Valeria was a very attentive and pleasant server answering all of our questions and the atmosphere was very pleasant. We will be back.

HAPPY HOUR AT THE TROPICANA. We were walking around downtown San Jose del Cabo before our dinner reservation at Come a Casa and decided to stop at Tropicana Inn for a drink. All of us were regular visitors to the old Tropicana Inn before it was completely renovated more than a year ago. There was a large blackboard at the outdoor seating in front of the restaurant at the Tropicana Inn offering two for one on domestic drinks between 4:00 and 5:30 pm. So, we took a table inside near the bar.

The bar in the restaurant has shelves to the ceiling displaying a wide range of spirits available. We asked our server what was included in the 2 x 1 offer and he said Margaritas, Palomas and Mojitos using domestic spirits (e.g., Jose Cuervo tequila). Tracey ordered a margarita but Jerry and Chris decided to go with a Don Julio Blanco with no ice in a martini glass from their special cocktails (not included in the 2 x 1 offer). Beth ordered a limonada minerale and I asked for a Diet Coke.

We had a nice time talking and drinking our chosen beverage before leaving to walk to the Italian restaurant up the hill for our dinner.

COME A CASA PASTA AT ITS BEST. Located on Calle Zaragoza (the down street), a block uphill from Jazmin's, Come a Casa has been open for three years in this location. Come a Casa started from home and then as a stall in the Food Truck Park in Cabo San Lucas. Entering the front door, the open kitchen is on the left with seating at a bar. There are three dining spaces - one in front and one in the back half of the restaurant and a third at the back to the left. The back of the restaurant features the bar and a large wood-fired pizza oven. The menu offers a full range of Italian pastas, pizza and main courses.

The father, Mauricio is the Executive Chef, his son is the chef and his daughter manages the reservations and seating of the guests. The restaurant is always full and so reservations are required (and only by phone). The flavors are amazing and it is one of the only places where there is no there is no acidic aftertaste to the tomato sauce. While Beth and I tried to get our fix about once a month, we hadn't been for months as we were both on high protein-low carbohydrate diets. But we had to take our guests from England there and Jerry, a long-time friend and new neighbor also loves the place.

Our server, Jesus gave us the menus and asked what we would like to drink. Jerry, Chris and Tracey shared a bottle of Corona del Valle Sauvignon Blanc from the Valle de Guadalupe. Jerry also ordered Pizza Bread, Burrata and a Peach Salad for the table to share. The Burrata came with some great bread and our server dripped honey on to the salad. Beth also ordered a Caesar Salad to start. It was a great way to start the meal.

The table ordered a number of different pasta dishes for the main course - Carbonara, Linguine Pomodoro, Pappardelle Pomodoro, Pappardelle Fruiti del Mar. The restaurant had a special mushroom carpaccio that night, which I decided to try. As all of the main courses were delivered, everyone was quiet for a moment as we dug into our meals. The fresh pasta, great tomato sauce and the additional of freshly grated parmesan cheese made the flavors even better. The meals were excellent.

But some of us had been waiting for the Lemon Tart for dessert. With four spoons (none for me with my diet), there was a rush to taste this truly tart dish with caramelized sugar on top. The brother and sister owners of Come a Casa, Christopher and Jessica came to ask how we had enjoyed our meal ... and we raved about it.

Reservations for dinner need to be made by phone as there is no online process at 624 177 1536. For more information about Come a Casa, visit their website at https://www.comeacasa-cabo.com/ or visit them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063764610338.

MAKE YOUR OWN CHOCOLATE AT THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. Located in the small plaza beside Fiorenza on Blvd Mijares (soon to move onto Blvd Mijares) is a very unique shop - The Chocolate Factory. Owned by Carlos Trejo, an entrepreneur who went to San Luis Potosi to study with Maestra Norma Orozco, the General Director of The Mexican School of Chocolate and Confectionary. Norma Orozco is the top consultant throughout Latin America on both making chocolate and building a business around it.

The chocolate factory makes its own chocolate with over 20 varieties of stuffed chocolates, 100% and 70% chocolate bars, chocolate covered almonds and even health products made with cacao. You can watch the process through the glassed-in factory room just inside the front door. Just walking through the store is an education about the benefits of cacao and chocolate. The walls are covered in murals showing the history of chocolate in Mexico. However, if you really want to learn about chocolate, you can join the Chocolate Factory's two-hour experience to learn to make your own chocolate. In a special room on the second floor of Plaza San Jose is a room where up to 12 people can experience each of the steps in making chocolate - roasting, removing the shells from the cacao, grinding the cacao into paste, turning the paste into chocolate, adding the flavors, and putting it into the molds to cool in a refrigerator.

We decided to experience the chocolate making process. Alex, our guide led us through the history of chocolate, how it was first made in Mexico by the Aztecs and Mayans and was both a ceremonial drink and a currency in the early days. Chocolate was taken to Spain and the history from a drink to chocolate bars was depicted in a video that started are experience (a copy is included below). After the video, we tasted the different types of chocolate and saw the raw cacao beans. The first step in the process is to shell and grind the beans. We were led to the tables and each of us was provided with a bowl of cacao beans to remove the shells. The shells were roasted in large Mexican bowls over a hot plate and stirred to make it easier to remove the shells. Removing the shells took a little time and the raw bean was then put in another bowl. Sometimes a whole bean could be taken from the shell other times, it was in pieces. The shell cacao beans were then put in a wooden canoe shaped tray and Alex add more beans to each of the trays.

The next step was to crush the beans with a small stick with a special round head. Once finished, the beans are put into a grinder to turn them into a paste by continuously turning the crank on the grinder. With the paste, we were shown a number of different recipes for chocolate that involved adding flavoring elements - corn flour, milk powder, cinnamon, chili, sugar. Each of us chose the ingredients that we would like to add to the cacao paste to create the taste for our chocolates. Then using our hands, the ingredients were kneaded together and finally made into small round chocolate balls and placed in paper cups. We also experienced the traditional chocolate drink by adding some of the mixed cacao paste into water and taking a drink. After tasting one of the chocolates, the rest went home to be enjoyed after several meals in the following days.

Alex did a great job and it was a very enlightening experience both about the history of chocolate and how it is made. The cost is about $50 per person and well worth it.

WALKING THE MALECON AT THE MARINA CABO SAN LUCAS. We recently went to Captain Tony's Bar and Grill for dinner on the marina by Tesoro. After our dinner we decided to explore the malecon and walk down to the other end to view all of the changes that have occurred over the past year. With the creation of A Place at Cabo and the start of the renovation of the Gray Ghost (the abandoned condominium project), the walk along the malecon is very different that it was only a short time ago. A poster shows the changes that have occurred between 1988 and 2025 and it is quite amazing.

While there are still lots of restaurants and shops in the marina area, A Place at Cabo has added a ferris wheel, a carousel and even a trolley that will travel part of the way along the marina. There are also a series of new high-end clothing stores. At each end of the renovations are Amarino Italian Ice Cream shops to stop and enjoy great ice cream. In addition to the well-known restaurants on the marina - Captain Tony's, Solomon's Landing. the Tiki Bar, Baja Cantina, Sancho's - there are now several new restaurants - Domo Sports Bar and Grill, Nashvilla, La Antojeria, as well as close to a dozen others with A Place at Cabo. Walking along the marina, you can hear the live music that is being performed in many of the restaurants.

The walk along the marina was very pleasant and only included one side. At the end closest to the mall, there are also a series of additional restaurants and walking south from Captain Tony's is a completely additional side of shops and restaurants that we did not visit on this trip.

DENTAL STUDIO LOS CABOS. Dentistry is very advanced in Los Cabos, which is especially true at Dental Studio Los Cabos. I went in for a delayed cleaning of my teeth and after Dr. Andres Garcia did the cleaning, he mentioned that I had several issues that I needed to address and suggested that we do an x-ray. Dental Studio has a 360-x-ray machine that while standing it takes the picture from all different angles letting the dentist look at your teeth from the top, bottom and both sides.

The result of the x-ray was that Dr. Andres identified a number of issues that needed to be addressed from simple fillings to checking a root canal performed by another dentist in the past. Dr. Andres did some follow up appointments on the fillings but asked Dr. Pedro Ortiz, the owner of Dental Studio Los Cabos to examine the root canals. It turns out that the root canal that had been done about 10 years before in Boston had not been sealed correctly and as a result bacteria had gotten in near the root and compromised it. As a result, it needed to be redone and the crown replaced. There was also another tooth that needed a root canal and new crown.

Dr. Pedro is always very careful to make sure that nothing hurts and that you are very comfortable while being treated. After each root canal, a digital scan devise is used to precisely determine the size and shape of the crown that is needed. Dental Studio Los Cabos has a 3-D cutting and printing machine that when fed the digital information cuts and shapes the crown from a blank that is matched to the color of your teeth. I watched as Dr Pedro manipulated the digital file on a screen behind me in the operetory before sending it to the 3-D printer. He informed me that it would take 12 minutes for the crown to be ready. Once the crown was finished, it was fitted to the tooth and adjusted for height, ensuring that the upper and lower teeth fit together perfectly. This process was followed on a separate appointment for the second tooth.

While visiting a dentist is no one's favorite activity, Dental Studio and its digital technology make the process faster, easier and more comfortable that my previous experiences in the United States. Thank you, Dr. Andres and Dr. Pedro and your great assistants.

MONARCH EFFECT FOUNDATION AT HOUSE OF BARRIE. Located in The Shoppes of Palmilla, The House of Barrie is a furniture and interior design store that offers a wide range of products for your home. Barrie Livingstone, the owner noticed the posts by the Monarch Effect Foundation mentioning the need for specific books for their College Prep program and realized that several of them were published by the same company from which their orders books that they offered at the store. Monarch Effect Foundation is a Mexican and American charitable organization that helps to send highly qualified students from Los Cabos to universities around the world to fulfill their dreams.

After discussions with Lisa Heid, one of the founders of MEF, they decided to hold a book event at the House of Barrie. As they said in the promotional ads, this was not a book reading but the opportunity for individuals who wanted to support Los Cabos' students to join in by buying the books needed for their college prep program. Unlike college preparation in the United States and Canada, this year long program is actually life preparation for leaving Los Cabos and traveling to a foreign country to attend university. Students learn everything from budgeting to shopping to study habits and planning.

The House of Barrie purchased all of the books and attendees at the event bought the books that they would like to donated to the Monarch Effect Foundation. Arriving at The House of Barrie at The Shoppes at Palmilla, there were two-long tables set up out front with a Monarch Effect Foundation banner displaying some of the books of interest for the students in their college prep program.

Walking through the two rooms of The House of Barrie, a visitor would see the wide range of furniture, accessories, artwork and glassware offered in the store. It is also clear that books are an important part of their business as books are displayed on dining tables, coffee tables, in shelves and on side tables and chairs throughout the retail establishment.

For this event, one table just past the checkout desk was stacked with copies of the books of interest to the Monarch Effect Foundation - Getting to Yes, Atomic Habits, Deep Work, Grit - the Power of Passion and Perseverance, Think Again. The event was such a success that Barrie Livingstone has agreed to maintain a permanent display of these books supporting the Monarch Effect Foundation throughout the rest of 2026. So, if you missed the event, you still have the opportunity to support the students of Los Cabos in preparing for their life at university in different places around the world.
