Alice's Awesome Adventures Oyster Farm and Complimentary Tasting Sea Kayak Tour this morning started in the fog, then dense fog, then less fog, but fog throughout the trip. We had calm seas which made the paddling mystical and easy.

We learned about how oysters are farm raised, how Mere Point Oyster Company farms oysters. how incredibly beneficial oysters are to the environment, and then everyone learned to shuck oysters. Each couple had their own tray of oysters to sauce (Alice's world-famous Maine Wild Blueberry Mignonette, lemon juice or chipotle tabasco sauce) the way they wanted to eat their oysters. Afterwards we returned the shells back to the bay by skipping them. The winner got a special prize when we returned to our start.

We didn't see any of the osprey but we heard them. We saw another Bonapart Gull, many Herring Gulls and Double Crested Cormorants, a harbor seal, some fish jump and just had fun!

Malaga Island, found in the southeastern section of the New Meadows River in SE Casco Bay. 300 yds from Phippsburg's Sebasco Village. Destination for the Children of the Dawn, Wabanaki tribes for over 5,000 years before being displaced by white English settlers. A mixed-race colony lived on that island from early 1820's - July 1, 1912 when the settlers were evicted by order of the State of Maine. The island was sold in a closed bid auction that wasn't so closed bid by the state of Maine on December 30, 1912. The island has remained uninhabited since. Thankfully Maine Coast Heritage Trust purchased the island and maintains it in a natural state for day visitors. It has been named to the National Registry of Historical Places.

To walk the island, is to walk an island that has no buildings. If you want to learn about the island - its prehistory before the colony, the colony's history, and the post history, you need to take a sea kayak & hike five-hour tour with Alice's Awesome Adventures or join a Zoom class. These wonderful people joined the tour. The next Zoom class is on October 6th at 7pm. You can register with an adult education program or directly at www.amaineguide.com

Master Maine Guide Alice doesn't publish all the photos taken on a trip. Today is one of those times. I had a family with four children under the age of 15, and my policy is not to publish those photos but to send them directly to their parents. That is what I did. So you are missing another nearly 50 photos of an incredible Oyster Farm and Complimentary Tasting Sea Kayak trip by Alice's Awesome Adventures.

We paddled to learn about how Mere Point Oyster Company raises oysters all year. We watched a fishing trawler come into Mere Point Bay to harvest pogies (menhaden) by net fishing to provide bait for lobstermen and to possibly have the fish oil used for fish oil products and the waste used for garden fertilizer. We watched a large roll on- roll off barge come at an extremely high tide (new moon and effects of tropical storm Erin), to pick up machinery from Smiths Boat Yard so that it could be transported to an island location. We learned to shuck oysters and then practiced. People tasted their first oysters with Alice's world-famous Maine Wild Blueberry Mignonette Sauce, organic lemon juice or chipotle tabasco sauce. Then they ate more all while sitting on an island in Casco Bay. We had an immature bald eagle fly within 20' of our heads while paddling, and a mature bald eagle fly over us while we were on land.

We thank our Wabanaki ancestors for coming to this place and Harpswell Heritage Trust for saving the island space for visitors.

There are openings in trips on Monday's and Friday's in September. Book at www.amaineguide.com

Nature keeps us humans, humble. She may put calm waters next to a boat launch and then allow you to paddle about 1/4 mile away and then bring winds out of the NW to raise the waves and whitecaps making it breezy, paddle with spray hitting your face, and challenging you! LOOSE HIPS SAVE SHIPS! Master Maine Guide Alice taught everyone that phrase and then put it into action when she showed how to do the "hula" in your boat not moving your shoulders. If you allow your boat to rock but disconnect your lower body from your upper body, you paddle and stay upright!

We all practiced that but the waves kept building and they were hitting the shore where we needed to go to have our oysters on some land owned by a local land trust. Where the winds were jumping over the top of the peninsula (leaving calm waters) there were no landing sites. So after learning how Mere Point Oyster Company raised the oysters and used the oyster float to hold them temporarily for market and then visiting a string of oysters that were growing, we headed back to the launch.

We quickly carried the kayaks back up the ramp and then had an OYSTER PICNIC! Master Maine Guide Alice gave a shucking lesson, and then everyone had their own chance to shuck the succulent briny sweet Mere Point Oyster Company oysters. After shucking the choice of plain, organic lemon juice, chipotle tabasco sauce or Alice's Maine Wild Blueberry Mignonette Sauce was up to each person slurping the oysters. Not everyone slurped but three dozen oysters were ordered for pick-up the same day.

While we were onshore, we did see oysters fresh from the bay brought up in the workboat heading to the chilly sorting and cleaning area that was nearby. Everyone had a chance to add check-ins to the Maine Oyster Trail contest.

There are openings in tours on Monday and Friday next week - 8/25 and 8/29 and Monday, September 1. Register at www.amaineguide.com

Everyone can kayak with a Registered or Master Maine Guide. They will help you learn to kayak, fine tune your strokes if you wish, and help you when you have trouble opening an oyster shell after your shucking lesson on an island when you are with Alice's Awesome Adventures.

Only three people joined the tour and only two tried the oysters and were surprised they liked them. But they didn't want more than one or two. So we had a great day of paddling together learning about oyster farming, clamming, and Maine!

These are candid photos taken by Master Maine Guide Alice, while she was paddling with the group. They are shared freely by Master Maine Guide Alice to her guests.

Harpswell. You can only get there by water or through Brunswick. Absolutely worth the drive down ME RT 24 on the windy road with no shoulders watching out for the cyclists and catching views. There are many pocket parks to explore regardless of the time of year. Alice's Awesome Adventures will happily take you out on a driving tour where we'll explore those parks and vistas. www.amaineguide.com

Sea kayaking on calm water on a hot summer day? Enjoy the cool Maine Casco Bay water! Learn about oyster farming versus naturally grown oysters and why you can eat an oyster in July and August!

The first picture is of one of the Mere Point Oyster Company workboats coming into Mere Point Boat Launch with over 2500 oysters to go up to the farm barn to be cleaned, sorted, and some sent to market and others back out to the farm. Monday's are a very, very busy day for them!

Alice's Awesome Adventures showcases Mere Point Oyster Company oysters because they are grown where we paddle! Sweet, briny, meaty oysters with incredible flavor! So much fun to paddle while learning how oysters are farm raised while seeing birds flying, fish (pogies) jumping out of the bay. and learning to shuck oysters.

There is still time to book an Oyster Farm and Complimentary Tasting Sea Kayak tour with Alice's Awesome Adventures on a Monday or Friday morning before the end of September. www.amaineguide.com

Girls Who Explore ME is a most incredible group for younger women that are actively discovering Maine in small groups! Always on an adventure like surfing, hiking, paddling, or discovering an area. Alice's Awesome Adventures was truly so happy to take this group to some of Master Maine Guide Alice's favorite spots in Harpswell while sharing history, natural history, and views. Of course we didn't get to visit all the spectacular spots but these wonderful women can now go back on their own and discover more!

We went from Skolfield Shores Preserves, Cliff Trail, Cribstone Bridge, Mackerel Cove, Giants Steps, Lands End, and Island Candy Shop.

Sea kayaking is hiking by water! Stay together and look for nature's wonders. Watch fish jump, watch the ripples on the water from a school of fish. See a double crested cormorant drying its wings or coming up from fishing and trying to swallow a fish. Discover shells and think about the indigenous people that came thousands of years before you and how they found the same shores for their summer encampments.

Enjoy watching a mother osprey feed her young fledged family and still protect them. Paddle slowly and listen to the light winds and sea's songs. Hear about the history of the area from Master Maine Guide Alice while polishing your skills at solo paddling.

Escape from the busy human world and enjoy meditative paddles. Such was our Friday paddle on upper Casco Bay with Alice's Awesome Adventures.
