I am joining a good friend on this trip. I just heard that 2 spots ahve opened up. let me know if you want to join. They are a great group and the diving in Cozumel is awesome right now. I just got back a few days ago and already planned a return. Since Warm Water Diving isn't currently planning any trips, I thought I'd pass this opportunity along.

Looking forward to seeing one when we visit in August 2020.

Orangutan crab! 🧡
Holy mother of cuteness. This eety-beety creature is the Orangutan Crab (Achaeus japonicus) which only has a carapace (body) of about 0.8 inches in diameter with extra long arms compared to its body. It’s covered in reddish brown hair sometimes laden with bits of “stuff” like shells or sand to increase its camouflaging capabilities.

Of course, you can see where it gets its name – it really does look like a miniature crustacean version of the orangutan! Can we all stop and take a moment to imagine this thing swinging from corals and stuff. How cool would that be?

Orangutan Crabs are typically found on bubble coral (Plerogyra sinuosa) just hanging out, doin their thang. That usually consists of sitting and waiting for plankton to get stick in its luscious locks, which it then picks off as snack food for the day. It uses its claws to “groom” out the tiny food stuffs and then plops the plankton into its mouth. So, again, we see a resemblance to the ape orangutan in that picking off parasites and [plankton] is something all the cool orange-haired creatures do.

It really makes you wonder… which came first: the Orangutan Crab or the Orangutan? Dun dun dun!

The Verde Pass region of the Philippines is one of the most diverse marine ecosystems on our planet, containing over 6500 species of fish and coral. This squat lobster is one of my favorite macro subjects and really is quite amazing when illuminated. Some early morning macro from Puerto Galera, Philippines.

Here we are, back in San Pedro, Belize for the. first time in 2 years. This is still a great place to see large fish, countless sharks and amazing topography. Thinking about an adventure the second week of January. This will likely be an inexpensive chance to do some diving on the second largest barrier reef in the world and hang out in Belize. Flights are are easy from anywhere in the US. I'll work to firm up details in the next few weeks. This trip will be limited to 8 divers. Let me know if you want to be included in the communications. Who is in?
