Oktoberfest is exactly what you think it is: loud, lively, and buzzing with energy. And it can be a lot. But what many visitors miss is that just a few steps away, tucked into a corner of the fairgrounds, there's a different side to the experience.

It’s called Oide Wiesn - literally, “Old Oktoberfest.” And it feels like stepping into another time. Vintage rides, traditional brass bands, and beer tents where you can actually hear the person next to you.

If the main Wiesn is all about the party, Oide Wiesn is about the heritage - and for me, that’s where the real magic is.

👉 If you're planning a trip to Germany and want to experience these kinds of places—both the well-known and the quietly special - I’d love to help you plan it.

The Black Forest is steeped in tradition - and somehow, time feels different here. It seems to tick a little slower, not out of laziness, but intention. Travel often moves fast. But here, in this quiet corner of Germany, I let it slow me down.

Massive stone walls studded with 42 towers, half-timbered houses with red-tiled roofs, and cobblestone streets: these are among the picturesque sites you will encounter in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, located in the southern German state of Bavaria on the famous Romantic Road. One of the few remaining fully walled towns in Germany, this is as close to a medieval setting as you can get.

Not much is left of the wall that once separated Berlin, and marked the division into East and West Germany. After reunification in 1989, the wall was teared down, with a few stretches remaining in memorial/museum type settings. The most fun one is at East Side Gallery, where 118 artists from 21 countries began painting the wall shortly after the fall of East Germany. East Side Gallery is now billed as the longest open-air gallery in the world, and is a must-visit when in Berlin.

One of the unexpected joys of traveling is getting a glimpse into the local life and meeting some the people that live in the place you visit. This was the case with meeting the owner of Cafe Baldeau in Bobbard- a small town in the Upper Rhine Valley in Germany. Cafe Baldeau is one of the last remaining traditional cafes in the region serving a variety of fresh homemade "Kuchen" (cake). Family-owned for decades, Bert Baldeau, who took over the cafe from his mum, shared the story of the cafe and even showed us newspaper clippings from decades ago. These are the chance encounters that stay with me long after my return home.

Baden-Baden in Germany is the northern gateway to the Black Forest, but it feels more Mediterranean than rustic, more cosmopolitan than rural. It features world-class thermal spas, fine dining, and a glamorous casino... This elegant city is still sort of an insider tip for Americans, but has long been a favorite getaway for Europeans.
Would you put it on your list?

Looking to visit the Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden? 🌄 Dramatically perched atop the Kehlstein mountain in the Alps near Berchtesgaden, it was constructed between 1937 and 1938 for Adolf Hi**er and primarily intended for diplomatic purposes, designed to impress (and intimidate) foreign leaders. It was part of Obersalzberg, a region that had been systematically developed into a N**i headquarters of sorts. It was here that some of the most cruel decisions of the murderous N**i regime were made, juxtaposed against a pubolic panorama.

While it's interesting to visit the Eagle's Nest with its long tunnel and golden elevator, it is the Documentation Center that really drives home this dark chapter of history.

Find out more about what to expect during a visit to the Eagle's Nest in our blog post. https://germanytravelcompany.com/eagles-nest-what-you-need-to-know/
