Burnside Tourism

Burnside Tourism Welcome to Burnside — Lake Cumberland’s only lakeside town. Steeped in Civil War history. The birth place of the Boy Scouts. Come visit! Rediscover Burnside.

Eat, play and stay with us. Rediscover yourself. The Making of Burnside
The community was originally settled along the banks of the Cumberland River and called Isabel Point, allegedly for a woman named Isabel who jumped off a nearby cliff after breaking off a relationship. The town was renamed for American Civil War General Ambrose Burnside who established a camp there during the war. In the 1950'

s the entire town was relocated for the impounding of Lake Cumberland. American author Harriette Simpson Arnow grew up here. Burnside is believed to be home of the first Boy Scout troop in the United States. In 1908, two years before the Boy Scouts of America was officially organized, Mrs. Myra Greeno Bass organized a local troop of 15 boys, using official Boy Scout materials she had acquired from England. An official state historical society marker commemorates the troop.

RECORD BROKEN. AGAIN!

Visitors spent a record $152.7 million in Somerset-Pulaski County in 2025, showing that tourism continues to work for this community!

This spending supported:

✅ 1,133 local jobs
✅ $31.5 million in employee income
✅ $11.1 million in state and local tax revenue

Tourism is more than vacations and weekends at the lake. It's jobs and tax savings for local families, customers for local businesses, support for community events, and revenue that helps strengthen our quality of life.

This achievement belongs to the attractions, restaurants, hotels, marinas, retailers, event organizers, community partners and hospitality workers who make Somerset, Burnside and Pulaski County a destination visitors want to experience again and again.

And the momentum isn't slowing down.

With Lake Cumberland 250 just around the corner and the opening of Horse Soldier Farms Distillery this summer, we're excited about what's next for The Capital of Lake Cumberland! Read the full announcement at the link in the comments below.
