It’s extremely rare for the drake to remain once the hen begins incubating her clutch. Typically, the drakes leave during this time to join other males and begin the molting process. Occasionally, though, a drake will stay nearby and seem to act as a sort of guard while the nesting process unfolds.

I believe the ducklings in this box have already hatched, and today is likely “jump day.” In this photo, it almost appears as though the drake is calling to them. Very uncommon for sure, but there are occasional cases where a drake stays involved.

I’m sure this drake is confused. Moma has been missing for four days now and is likely gone, most likely taken by a predator. Her clutch was just about to hatch, and now those eggs are lost as well. 🙁
