Located right in Hatteras Village, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum dives into the incredible maritime history of the Outer Banks and the waters that earned this stretch of coastline its famously eerie nickname. From shipwrecks and lifesaving history to pirates, storms, maritime culture, and even tales like the mysterious Carroll A. Deering “ghost ship,” there are plenty of stories from these waters that sound like they belong around a campfire. 👻 Graveyard of the Atlantic

Talk about a haunting housing situation! Imagine looking outside after a hurricane and realizing your house had decided to relocate without you. 😳
This throwback takes us to Avon in October of 1944, after a hurricane struck on September 14 and moved around 100 homes from their foundations. Coast Guardsmen from the Big Kinnakeet Lifeboat Station used a tractor to help haul the displaced homes back where they belonged. 🏠
The photo shows Chief Boatswain’s Mate Alvin Price directing the return of his own house, which had been blown several hundred yards from its original site. Forget things going bump in the night... the whole HOUSE went bump in the night. 👻

Because the best family vacations include the family members who shed the most. 😂

Did you know many of our units are dog friendly? That means your four legged best friend doesn’t have to stay behind while you head to Hatteras Island! Pack the leash, the treats, and approximately 47 more treats because apparently they’re starving. 🐶

Morning walks by the ocean? Absolutely. Naps after a long day of exploring? Mandatory. Taking up 90% of the bed even though they have their own perfectly good spot? We already know how this is going to go. 🌊

October has officially arrived, and we’re taking our Monday motivation to the spooky side! 🎃
Leave yesterday where it belongs. We’ve got crisp fall days, spooky stories, Hatteras Island adventures, and an entire new week ahead of us. The only thing we’re letting haunt us this month is the question of when we’re getting back to the ocean. 🌊
And with a view like this? Even the gloomy days are looking pretty BOO-tiful. 👻

is here, and we're starting with everyone's favorite local legend: The Cora Tree. 🌳

If you've visited Hatteras Island, you may have heard of Cora, but do you know the whole story? Settle in for a local legend that makes us wonder if it's more history than legend... you tell us. 👀

Cora and her infant child moved to Frisco in the early 1700s. We don't know about you, but our first thought of that time period is one thing: Witch Trials.

Cora kept to herself, and rumors quickly began flying about the mysterious woman and her child. Then, a local boy reportedly mocked Cora's child. Cora shot him a scathing glare, and days later, he became gravely ill. Was it the 1700s and lack of proper medical care? Certainly not. Cora was obviously the culprit.

Enter Captain Eli Blood, who arrived on Hatteras Island from... SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS. You can imagine his spidey senses were more than tingling. 🕷️

Eli reportedly knew the tests used to identify witches, and wouldn't you know it, Cora failed all three.

Cora and her child were tied to an oak tree with kindling at their feet. Thankfully, Captain Tom Smith and other locals protested the whole unlawful-murder-of-a-woman-and-her-baby situation and demanded an actual trial. Seems pretty reasonable to us, just sayin'. 😬

And this is where things get... mystical.

As the captains argued, Cora's child allegedly leapt from her arms, transformed into a huge tawny cat with green eyes and a red mouth, and fled into the woods.

Then, as Eli prepared to light the fire, sunny skies turned dark. Thunder cracked and lightning struck the tree. ⚡

When the smoke cleared, Cora was GONE. The ropes and kindling remained, but the tree was split with four letters reportedly burned into its heart: CORA.

Neither Cora nor her child was ever seen again.

The Cora Tree still stands in Brigands Bay in Frisco, and some say that mysterious cat still roams the area. 🐈

October is showing off this morning! These photos were taken today, October 3, at 9:00 AM, with sunshine, sparkling ocean views, and gentle waves rolling ashore. Now THIS is our kind of Saturday morning! ☀️

Look at all that sand! Nourishment pipes remain visible along the oceanfront, but that beautiful blue horizon is stealing the show today. 🌊
