After being illegally smuggled out of Israel, two extremely rare ancient coins have officially been returned by U.S. authorities to the Israel Antiquities Authority during a ceremony in New York on May 11, 2026.

• One coin is a rare Hasmonean-era bronze prutah dating back over 2,000 years and featuring a seven-branched menorah connected to the Second Temple period in Jerusalem.

• The second is a 2,500-year-old silver tetradrachm from ancient Ashkelon featuring the Greek goddess Athena on one side and an owl on the other.

Amazing to see these important pieces of biblical-era history finally returned home to Israel.
