Alabama Hills is a scenic, geological wonderment located at the base of Mt. Whitney in a region known as Owens Valley. This area has been a popular location for many movies since the 1920’s, especially Western movies due to its “rugged environment”.

The Paiute-Shoshone Tribe know this area as Payahuunadü, which means “the land of flowing water”. It has been a long time since the Paiute have managed the water here though. Once the Europeans made way to this region, they quickly and forcibly took over the Paiute’s land. Those that survived disease and slaughter were used as laborers due to their knowledge of the mountains and land so well. The Paiutes were later moved to multiple reservations.

The area was later named Alabama Hills by Confederate enthusiasts paying tribute to a Southern warship, the CSS Alabama. Confederate sympathizers initially named the many mining claims in the area after the ship, which later applied to the entire region.

In the early 1900’s, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power built a controversial aqueduct in this region which carried water away from the valley and into the city of Los Angeles. Once President Theodore Roosevelt signed it into congress in 1906, Owen’s Lake (or Patsiata as called by the Paiutes) was slowly drained. This quickly caused a ton of dust pollution which is still a major issue today.

Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail: https://hiddenca.com/ernie-maxwell-scenic-trail/

The Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail in Idyllwild is an easy hike with slight elevation gain. It will take you through pine and oak trees and greet you with pristine views which include Tahquitz/Suicide Rock! The trail is named after Ernie Maxwell, the founder of the Idyllwild Town Crier.

Maxwell is said to have been an advocate for the outdoors and wanted a horse trail which led from Idyllwild to Humber Park. He finally got his trail.

This is an easy hike in my opinion and is mostly flat the entire time. There will be pockets along the way which offer views for as far as the eye can see. The air is so fresh and the trees mighty! This is a great trail for beginners as many of the other trails in Idyllwild are far more strenuous.

No permit is required to hike this trail, but any vehicle parked in Humber Park will need a National Forest Adventure Pass.

Pioneertown: https://hiddenca.com/pioneertown/

Built in the 1940’s, Pioneertown was originally created with the purpose of being a live-in Old West motion-picture set. The set was a place for the actors to live while filming and was designed to look like an 1870’s frontier town.

More than 50 popular western films from the 1940’s and 50’s were shot here with famous actors like the Cisco Kid’s Leo Carrillo And Roy Roger’s.

I love getting to explore bits of history and this place certainly did not disappoint. The people of Joshua Tree are colorful and tend to congregate here. There are many great photo opportunities and plenty of history to soak up. This is a great starting point for the many potential adventures in this lovely area.

Esoteric Fraternity: https://hiddenca.com/esoteric-fraternity/

Article & photos by Allison Morgan- The Esoteric Fraternity is an order founded in the 1880s by self-proclaimed prophet of occult wisdom, Hiram Butler, in Boston, Massachusetts. The order was founded for the purpose of “the study and unfoldment of the inner and true sense of divine inspiration, the interpretation of the Scriptures – all Scriptures.”

Over the years, Esoteric Fraternity/Hiram Butler helped invent popular astrology, printed over 30 books and booklets and (after a bit of a s*x scandal) moved his small band of followers to Applegate, California, where the last member still lives on the grounds of their communal homestead.

Kaleidoscope Desert: https://hiddenca.com/kaleidoscope-desert/

By far one of the most interesting Airbnb’s AND animal experiences I have ever visited is now Kaleidoscope Desert in Morongo Valley. Imagine an art-filled wonderland tucked away just outside Joshua Tree. Add in a beautiful natural pool with a back-drop of the San Jacinto Mountains.

Now include exotic animals roaming about such as zebras, emus, ponies, peacocks and a ton of other animals. That just begins the description of what this place is.

Huntington Central Park East: https://hiddenca.com/huntington-central-park-east/

Huntington Central Park East is one of the largest urban parks in Orange County, with many fun and engaging activities which range from their secret garden to multiple lakes.

Amenities include four playgrounds, a nature center, fishing, frisbee/disc golf, horseshoes, viewpoint, lakes, equestrian trails, dog park, urban forest, exercise course, restrooms and three restaurants. The Senior Center and Central Library are also located within the park.

I was really surprised by how huge this park was and how beautiful! I’ve been twice now and both times it’s been filled with people enjoying their day. We originally came here for the secret garden but quickly discovered there is so much more to do. The urban forest is a beautiful, shaded path that leads to the secret garden.

There are also two lakes with many migratory birds to watch. They also have an epic playground if you have a little one! There are multiple restaurants on site and it is VERY kid and dog friendly!

We stumbled upon BAPS the same way we stumbled upon the Egyptian Building, which was driving by it on the freeway. I immediately yelled to get off the exit so we can see what this incredible place is all about!

My first thought is how the heck is something this astounding right off the freeway in Chino Hills? How did I not know about it sooner?

Baps is located on 20 acres and is free to the public to respectfully appreciate and explore. There is a stunning 91 ft. lotus-shaped pond and multiple intricately-carved structures which house their Mandir (which is a Hindu temple), a cultural center, gymnasium and classrooms.

Over 900 volunteers spent approximately 1.3 million man hours to construct the Mandir. The Mandir was built using a combination of state-of-the-art engineering methodology and ancient carving techniques.

Strawberry Hill: https://hiddenca.com/strawberry-hill/

Strawberry Hill is located in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Walk around Stow Lake and if you are lucky, it may be filled with foggy goodness like the day we captured these photos!

Strawberry Hill is occupied by an entire island with hiking trails and two beautiful, stone bridges connecting across the lake.

The island also has a magnificent waterfall and Chinese peace pagoda. The top of the hill is a quiet and peaceful open space with panoramic views of San Francisco although the view is slightly obscured by trees.

In the center of the open area are the ruined foundations of the Sweeny Observatory, built in 1891 as a public viewpoint and destroyed by the 1906 earthquake.

Slab City: https://hiddenca.com/slab-city-niland/

I respect living off the grid, the free-thinkers, artist communities–that is all beautiful. Slab City is all of that except with a dark twist.

This is a highly complex community that cannot really be lumped into one category besides having a few common grounds–living off the grid & as far away from the “man” as possible. This is an area with no rules and where one is left to do whatever they please. When man is given that type of freedom, almost anything is possible.

I have done my fair share of research and am truly impressed with what they’re doing on many levels. The amount of innovation going on and self-sustainability is truly admirable. They are treating this place as its own town complete with a dance hall, church, internet café, hot spring and even a city council with board members.

For many people, this is the only place that they can call home, and on top of that, the only place they’ve ever truly felt at home. This is heaven on earth for many of them and I completely respect that.

If I had to attempt to describe Slab City I would say it is a sophisticated homeless shelter created by the people for the people. You would probably feel safer visiting here than, say, skid row–although there are still plenty of shady people. There are also extremely intelligent, kind and talented folks and I would not suggest assuming much of anything or underestimating them. There is a force out here.

Silver City Ghost Town: https://hiddenca.com/silver-city-ghost-town/

One of the most unusual museums I have visited would be the Silver City Ghost Town. I’m not sure if it qualifies as an authentic ghost town as the buildings were all transferred here, but they are still historic to the area nonetheless.

What makes this place so unusual is a combination of the props, the stories attached to the buildings and most importantly, the energy here. For those sensitive to that type of thing, you should know immediately what I’m talking about.

We were fortunate enough to meet the now late owner when we visited, J. Paul Corlew, who sat with us for a good 30 minutes, telling us some crazy stories.

When I was putting this article together, I looked him up to make sure to share it with him, only to learn he had passed away a month after we visited.
