A story from today's Out Here Newsletter.

"Switching gears this week - I thought I'd share one of my favorite episodes of the music series I created with my friend Michael and the Dallas Observer, called "Busking". We started this series for fun, and to stay sharp in between bigger shoots for clients.

This was Episode 40, with the Bacon Brothers, filmed on a hot July day in Dallas. We spent a good hour and a half with Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael, up in Kevin's suite at the Belmont Hotel. It was pretty thrilling to work with Kevin and his band, they were fun and generous with their time.

Good music & fun shows too! This was 8 years ago, I know because Jen was there and very pregnant with Andy, who turns 8 in August."

We’re closed today in observance of Memorial Day, but I wanted to share one of my most impactful travel experiences. In 2014 I had the privelege creating this film for Uniworld Boutique River Cruises for their Paris & Normandy itinerary, which included a full day at the Beaches of Normandy. We had just visited the American Cemetary with its endless rows of white marble gravestones, and all day we tried our best to be thoughtful and unintrustive with our cameras. But we were there to capture the experience, and I saw most of it through a lens.

Later when we were standing on Omaha Beach, I looked around me and the weight of what had happened there really caught me. I turned off my camera and sat down on the sand, put my hands into it, and tried my best to absorb the moment. What must it have felt like for those young boys to approach the beach in a landing craft that day, knowing what was likely to happen to them. Their courage and selflessness in the face of such peril and overwhelming fear, is still hard to comprehend. They charged into the fire, not knowing if any of this would work. It might all fail and the war could be lost - but they had to try. They never got to know that their sacrifice mattered, that it worked. Those kids and the Allied forces gave up their yesterdays for our tomorrows, and they saved the world.
