A few pretty flowers and a few exciting updates from the homestead 🌼

We’re always looking for ways to make your stay a little more comfortable, and we’ve recently added a few improvements around the property:

✨ New griddles in all of our tiny cabins - perfect for pancakes 🥞
✨ New handrails at the tiny cabins loft stairs for easier access
✨ Boot cleaners at each cabin to help with muddy hikes and rainy days
✨ Refreshed hiking trails with improved signage

We love finding small ways to make a big difference, and many of our favorite improvements have come from guest suggestions along the way.

If you’ve stayed with us and have an idea that would make your next visit even better, we’d love to hear it. We’re committed to continually improving and creating the best possible experience for our guests.

Thank you for being part of our journey. 💛

Our pastor has been guiding us through the Book of Jonah for a few weeks. This study has made me realize how easy it is to love God’s mercy when it’s for me.

It’s much harder when it’s for someone who has hurt me.

Sometimes I do want God to change hearts. I just want Him to do it on my timeline, in my way, with consequences that feel fair to me and the hurt I’ve felt. To make it worth it, somehow. To make it make sense. But grace has never worked that way.

I’ve read this story a thousand times, but this time I realize I’m not standing apart from the story. I’m in it. I’m Jonah standing on a hill, looking at those who have hurt me as Nineveh -undeserving.

Maybe that’s the uncomfortable beauty of grace. None of us earn it. Not the people who hurt us. Not the people we don’t understand. Definitely not me.

And yet God keeps showing it anyway.

I don’t know. I just thought maybe if I’m struggling, someone else might be, too. Thank God He is more gracious than I am. And I’m learning to rejoice when His grace reaches others, too. I know it’ll take a lifetime of work in me, and I’m holding on tight, grateful for each time I don’t get what I deserve.

Happy Sunday, friends. May we all show each other a little more grace this week - we receive it so freely. 🤍

Did you know one of Kentucky’s most unique attractions is just 15 minutes from Hooting Owl Homestead?

Take a short drive to Kentucky Reptile Zoo and come face-to-face with alligators, turtles, iguanas, and one of the world’s most impressive collections of snakes. 🐊🐍🐢

But it isn’t just a zoo. It’s a world-renowned research facility where venom from healthy snakes is carefully collected for antivenom production and medical research. Scientists from around the world use the facility as a resource for venom studies and reptile research. Visitors can even watch a live venom extraction demonstration when scheduled.

We go by about once a year and it’s always an unforgettable experience.

Handsome Brick out for a stroll 🐓

Roosters get a bad rep, but a good one is steady. Noble.
I admire their quiet leadership - always protective, watchful, sacrificial even. I’ve lost several roosters over the years, always for the sake of their flock.

Brick keeps watch, sounds the alarm when danger comes, and somehow always makes sure everyone else eats first. I admire them. I’m thankful for this little guy and the ones before him.

We got to explore the Gorge a little yesterday. Seems like we never leave the Homestead. I don’t mind… but it’s easy to forget the beauty all around us. I do love being able to enjoy our beautiful area and have experiences I can share with our guests. We’re blessed to live here and have a home we don’t want to leave. I hope everyone had a happy Memorial Day weekend!

3 years ago we opened the doors to The Barn Owl for the very first time. What a beautiful three years it has been. We have been so, so blessed by all the folks who have become family here at the Homestead. Thank you so much for all the love, support, and memories. May the Lord continue to use the barn as a place where folks can rest and see His endless goodness in His beautiful creation.
