Tomorrow Kathy and I head for Australia! Stopping in Hawaii to visit Kathy's cousin and do a couple of SCUBA dives. Then on to the Land of Oz for Wine Tasting, zoology and astronomy in the Outback, and SCUBA diving on the Great Barrier Reef. We will be gone for the entire month of November. 2009 DePonte Cellars Baldwin Family Reserve Dundee Hills
Immediately thought of Robert Louis Stevenson's comment: "Wine is bottled poetry." Rich fruity nose with hints of floral and spice. Smooth, luxurious mouthfeel. Plum, black cherry, notes of anise, a tiny bit of earthiness. Nicely balanced tannins, excellent structure right through. Sweet medium finish. Delightfully drinkable.

Tasting 2015 Domaine Drouhin "Louise" Pinot Noir
Gratuity from Peter and Lisa. Thank you! Here's what I thought:
Musty, earthy, sweet cloying nose. Smooth, syrupy mouthfeel. Black cherry, plum, truffles and a hint of cinnamon. Nicely balanced. Long, sugary finish. Way overpriced at $112/750ml but very drinkable. (I notice the 2014 is selling for $68/750ml. That's about right for this wine.)

Tasting Sinnean 2011 Resonance Vineyard Pinot Noir.
Gratuity from Joanne D. Thank you! Here's what I thought: This is a fine example of a good vintner struggling with a bad vintage. From the label, "2011 was not the easiest growing season." Understatement! Odd, chemically nose. Thin mouthfeel. Very little subtlety, just grapes with the slightest hint of smoke. Short, almost sweet finish. Perfectly drinkable, but disappointing ... not what we expect from the Willamette Valley, and especially not from Peter Rosback! Peter's 2006 "TFL" Pinot Noir was one of the best I've ever tasted.

Tasting a bottle of Archery Summit 2013 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir Red Hills Estate today, a gratuity from Scott back in 2015. Thank you, Scott! Here's what I thought:
Light fruity nose. Smooth light mouthfeel. Slightly minerally cherry and currant. Exceptionally well balanced. Rich medium length slightly smoky finish. A very drinkable Pinot.

Enjoying a 2009 Vista Hills Pinot Noir called "Treehouse," a gift from my clients Don and Debbie ... thank you! Here's what I thought: Delightful, rich, fruity nose with the air of the high ridges blowing through it. Not complex; simple, strong black cherry and mineral flavors. A tiny bit hot (not surprising for an '09). Smooth, light mouth feel. Short sweet finish. Needs air. Wonderfully drinkable.

Tasting Notes:
WillaKenzie Estate 2012 Pinot Noir Emery Vineyard Yamhill-Carlton:
Rich earthy nose. Amazing burgundy stained glass color. Syrupy mouth feel. Plums and cherry cordial with hints of mineral and a little edge. Long, slightly hot finish. Definitely needs air; decant. An excellent example of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, eminently drinkable and underpriced at $48/750ml. I'm not a fan of WillaKenzie because they have become so big and commercial, but this is a good wine!

2009 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir - De Ponte Estate Vineyard
06/10/2014 This is a truly beautiful wine! Approachable, fruity, balanced, just the right amount of spicyness, a hint of coffee/cocoa. Opens up with rich roundness upon decanting (needs a little air). Love the long, long finish!
