Thank you to 21 WFMJ for covering the e-bike story. The challenge isn’t the machines—it’s that we’re still debating symptoms instead of infrastructure.

It was interesting that the interview focused heavily on Boardman representation, especially given their recent position not supporting the planned bike lanes along the redesigned Glenwood Avenue corridor. Dropping dedicated lanes due to concerns about “distracted drivers” doesn’t eliminate risk—it simply leaves vulnerable road users without separation in a higher-conflict environment.

E-bikes aren’t inherently dangerous. But like any faster-moving vehicle, they require road systems designed for real-world speeds and mixed traffic. Outdated road design is the real issue here. When communities build dedicated, protected bike lanes, vehicle speeds drop, conflicts decrease, and safety outcomes improve for everyone—pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.

If we want safer streets, we have to stop framing the problem as new technology versus old habits, and start focusing on the infrastructure that shapes behavior.

After reading this yesterday, I wrestled with myself over whether I should even post it. I did this person the courtesy of not responding directly, but it serves as a perfect teachable moment to acknowledge where we are as a society.

​It’s telling that our cancellation post has twice as many comments and shares as the actual event announcement did. But that’s the algorithm for you—negativity and drama will always get pushed to the top of the feed over a straightforward community safety announcement.

​To clarify the misconception in comments like the one pictured: there was no corporate cash grab or "omission" here. The $15 registration fee was determined, required, and handled entirely by the city to cover standard administrative costs for youth programming. We were simply brought in to provide our gear, expertise, and a safety clinic.

​As I’ve realized, it doesn't matter how many 5-star reviews we have, how much safety advocacy we promote, or how much our hearts are full of doing the right thing. You will always be viewed through some people's narrow lens, and there's absolutely nothing you can do to change that for them. The marketing on the city's side was fine—the community engagement just wasn't there until things took a turn into drama.

​Thanks to the city officials of Hubbard for wanting to collaborate, and hopefully, we can reschedule in the future.

​Moving forward, rentals at both locations are now fully bookable for June 6th, 2026.
