My last day in Rome and I tried to fit in as much as possible.

The Spanish Steps. The Trevi Fountain. The Vatican Basilica. The Colosseum. In the heat of an Italian summer with what felt like every tourist in Europe alongside me.

It was a lot. It was worth it. My feet have opinions about it.

But the absolute highlight of the day and honestly one of the highlights of the entire trip was the cooking class.

Our instructor Francesco with Holy Pizza was extraordinary. Hands on, personable, passionate about every single thing he was teaching us and completely memorable in the way that only the best guides ever are. We learned to make fresh pasta and gelato from scratch and I now understand things about Italian cooking that no recipe ever could have taught me.

That is the takeaway from Rome for me. Not just the landmarks, as breathtaking as they are. It is the history woven into every street, the architecture that stops you mid step, the food that tastes like it was made specifically for you in that moment. The Roman era left something behind in this city that you genuinely feel when you are standing in it.

Grazie per il tempo meraviglioso. Arrivederci.

The last full day at sea and I made it count.

Brunch at The Wake to start, Virgin Voyages’ steakhouse at the stern of the ship with views straight out over the ocean. The bottomless brunch is a nice change of pace from the rest of the dining on board. More sophisticated, more relaxed, a little celebratory. The kind of meal you linger over because there is nowhere else you need to be. Then the spa, bingo with the Diva and the Persephone show in the Red Room to close out the night.

If you sail Virgin Voyages do not miss Persephone. The entire Red Room transforms into a 360 degree theater with no stage barrier between you and the performers. Aerial acrobatics happening directly above your head. Performers weaving through the crowd. Artists close enough to touch. It is a completely immersive retelling of the Greek myth of the queen of the underworld and it is unlike any show I have ever seen at sea or on land.

Then came the packing. Nobody talks about how sad it is to pack up a RockStar cabin.

Tomorrow Rome. Then home.

Livorno and Pisa today and the gelato alone was worth the port stop.

The tour made its way to Pisa to see the Leaning Tower and I will say this, it is one of those things that sounds like a tourist cliché until you are actually standing in front of it and realize it genuinely should not be standing at all. The cathedral alongside it is stunning and completely overshadowed by its famous neighbor which feels a little unfair.

Then back to Livorno for lunch by the sea, some shopping, pastries and espresso that ruin you for everything back home.

Livorno does not get the attention of Florence or Pisa but as a seaside city it has a real charm and energy that is completely its own. A great port day.

Cannes was not what I expected and I mean that in the best possible way.

Yes Cannes is glamorous and yes the Croisette is everything you have seen in photos. But today I went deeper than the famous coastline.

I took a tour through Provence, an olive oil tasting from a local producer in the region, made homemade bruschetta with oil that made everything I have ever drizzled on bread at home feel like a crime, and had wine because of course.

Provence is also known for something else entirely, its flowers and the perfume industry that grew from them. Grasse, just up the road from Cannes, is considered the perfume capital of the world and the whole region carries that legacy. I picked up a bottle for Harper and felt very French doing it.

Then the tour made its way to Saint Paul de Vence. A medieval hilltop village that feels completely frozen in time. Cobblestone streets, art galleries, incredible lunch and the kind of afternoon that makes you never want to leave.

This is the version of the French Riviera most tourists miss entirely and it was the highlight of my time in Cannes.

Ajaccio, Corsica. Napoleon’s birthplace and a port day that had a little bit of everything.

I started the morning with a kayak around the bay and I jumped into the Mediterranean for the first time on this trip. Worth it entirely.

Wandered through the downtown, visited Napoleon’s birthplace and the cathedral and soaked in the history of a city with a story bigger than most people realize.

It was also extremely hot so I made the very responsible decision to come back to the ship early and let Scarlet Lady take care of me for the rest of the afternoon. No regrets whatsoever.

The Amalfi Coast absolutely lives up to every single thing you have ever heard about it.

Today we ported in Naples and made our way along one of the most breathtaking coastlines in the world. Winding roads carved into cliffs dropping straight into the bluest water I have ever seen. Villages stacked on top of each other in ways that should not be physically possible.

I shopped in Amalfi, the linens, the ceramics, the limoncello, the local olive oil, everything you would want to bring home. The lemons alone are worth the trip. Nothing you have ever had at home compares.

I passed by Mount Vesuvius, took a boat along the coastal villages and ended in Sorrento. Every single stop felt like a painting.

The food. The pizza. I cannot even talk about the pizza without needing a moment.

If the Amalfi Coast is on your bucket list stop waiting. There is no version of this trip that disappoints.

Twenty one years ago I was stationed at NAS Sigonella near Catania Sicily as a US Navy Petty Officer. Catania was where we came to shop, eat, explore and just breathe outside of base life.

Today I walked those same streets again.

I could not get on base; the Italian government doesn’t allow veterans with standard base access, but the city itself held more than enough memories. The pastries. The espresso. The blood red orange juice that I have missed ever since I left and finally got to have again today. The market. The energy of a city that feels completely unchanged by time.

I had lunch in Aci Castello overlooking the water and I sat there trying to reconcile the person I was at 26 with the person sitting there now. Twenty one years is a long time. I wish I could go back and tell that younger version of me to slow down and soak in every single moment.

The best moment of the day was FaceTiming my best friend, someone I met right here when we served together at Sigonella. Some friendships are forged in places like this and they never leave you.

This is why travel matters. Not just for the new places but for the old ones that remind you who you are and where you came from.

Worth staying up until 2am for.

Sailing through the Strait of Messina between the tip of Italy and Sicily tonight, a pilot boat pulled alongside Scarlet Lady while we were still moving, transferred the harbor pilot on board and then sped back out into the open water. Fast, precise and completely surreal to watch from the deck.

A harbor pilot is a local maritime expert who boards vessels to navigate safely through specific channels and straits. We could not see the drop off on the other side but we knew exactly what was happening and honestly that made it even cooler.

Most people never know this happens on a cruise. I had no idea I would be standing on deck at 2am watching it unfold in real time between two countries.

The Mediterranean keeps delivering.

Nobody told me we would be passing a volcano on this sailing.

Tonight Scarlet Lady sailed past Stromboli and we watched it erupt right in front of us from the deck. The lava glowing against the night sky reflected on the Mediterranean, I genuinely could not believe what I was seeing.

This is what happens when you sail the Mediterranean. The unexpected moments that no itinerary can promise and no resort can replicate.

Today was already a good day. Spa time, a beautiful dinner at Pink Agave on board and then this.

Tomorrow I am in Catania Sicily, a place that holds a very special place in my heart for reasons I will share tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Worse places to work from. 🌊

Booking vacations from Virgin Voyages’ signature red hammock on my private terrace somewhere in the Mediterranean. The ocean sounds are doing things for my productivity.

This is the job. I love this job.

Ready to let me plan yours from my hammock?
