Polly Mead Patraw was the first woman park ranger at Grand Canyon National Park in 1929. She was the second woman ranger-naturalist in the entire park service.

With a botany degree from the University of Chicago, she first applied to the Forest Service but was denied. Undaunted, she was accepted shortly after to be the first woman ranger-naturalist at Grand Canyon National Park.

Her uniform consisted of the standard National Park Service uniform and a soft-brim hat. Women's uniforms were not available.

Her job as a ranger-naturalist included lectures, auto tours, nature hikes, and writing about her findings. She served two summer terms and continued on through the spring of 1931. Today, her legacy as a trailblazing ranger-naturalist lives on.

African Americans have played a vital role in every era of Mammoth Cave's rich history since its re-discovery by modern humans in the late 1700s. The cave's origin story as a tourism destination began with the work and resilience of enslaved African Americans. In the early 19th century, enslaved workers mined saltpeter from the nitrate-rich dirt in the cave — a key ingredient in black gunpowder used during the War of 1812. These men worked under harsh conditions while contributing to the fight for freedom that they themselves were denied.

In the 1920s, getting a pilot's license was impossible for black men and women in the United States, but Bessie Coleman was determined. She learned from her brother, a WWI Veteran, that French women were flying planes! So, she moved to France to gain her flying certification. On June 15, 1921, Bessie Coleman achieved her goal, making history as the first African American woman to earn a pilot's license. 🛩️
