Cape Charles Lighthouse Water Tower Fun Facts!
1. It’s not actually a lighthouse!
Even though it looks like one, it’s a fully functional water tower that serves the Cape Charles community.
2. Built in 1992
This unique structure was built to replace an aging water tower—and designed to resemble the old Cape Charles Lighthouse that once stood offshore.
3. Award-winning design
It won a national award from the Steel Plate Fabricators Association for combining structural engineering with creative design.
4. It’s huge!
The tower holds around 300,000 gallons of water and stands approximately 200 feet tall—taller than most buildings in town!
5. It lights up at night
There’s a red beacon at the top—just like a real lighthouse—but it's meant for aircraft visibility, not boats.
6. Inspired by a real lighthouse
Its design mimics the third Cape Charles Lighthouse built in 1895 on nearby Smith Island, which still stands but was decommissioned in 2019.
7. Local landmark status
For many visitors, the tower is one of the first recognizable sights when driving into Cape Charles—it's a perfect photo op!
8. Part of Cape Charles' charm
Locals love it for its quirky charm—it blends utility with coastal character and makes for a perfect “you’re here!” moment.
