This week's destination is Dubai. Dubai is a city in the Middle East and one of the Emirates or States of the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is located on the Persian Gulf and is situated within the Arabian Desert. Travelers can take a tour of the desert in the evenings called the desert safari where the sand dunes of the desert can be experienced. Dubai is a cosmopolitan city that is considered the business and cultural hub of the Middle East. The city is known for its tall skyscrapers buildings. This week’s destination is the Ankor Wat temple complex in Cambodia. Angor Wat is the most important and famous sightseeing attraction in Cambodia, which a collection of temple ruins in the jungle. Ankor Wat is located in Siem Reap, which is in the north central part of Cambodia and about 190 miles from the capital, Phnom Penh. Ankor Wat’s collection of ruins is that of a Hindu temple and is considered the largest religious building in the world. Ankor Wat was originally built as a temple dedicated to the Hindu God, Vishnu, but was then converted as a Buddhist temple in the 13th century as the country converted to Buddhism. This explains the many Buddha statues that adorn the ruins today. In addition, the carvings on the temple ruins depict many Hindu mythological stories such as the battle of Kurukshetra from the Mahabharata, the Battle in Lanka from the Ramayana, and the Churning of the Ocean to receive the nectar of immorality for the Hindu Gods and Demons. This week’s destination is Costa Rica. Two of the most interesting sights to see in Costa Rica are Arenal Volcano and the Braulio Camillo National Park. Arenal Volcano is the youngest and most active volcanoes in Costa Rica and in the world. It first erupted in 1968 and has been continuously active since then. Arenal volcano is located in the Northwestern part of the country on the shore of Lake Arenal. Today, visitors can see the activity of the volcano and the bright red lava at night. The other most important sight in Costa Rica is the Braulio Carrillo National Park. Even from a car, the view of the rainforest is stunning. There are many hiking trails, which are the main attractions in the park. On these trails, visitors have a feast for their eyes with different flora and fauna. In addition, there are few trails, which are wheelchair accessible (pictured here). The park’s beauty can also be experienced from the aerial tram, which is an open gondola taking visitors on a two level tour of the rainforest canopy. There are approximately 3, 750 cherry trees along the Tidal Basin and around the Washington Monument. In 1912, Japan sent the trees to the United States as a sign of friendship. The cherry blossom festival was first held in Washington, D.C. in 1935 and now is held every year in April.
