John Steinbeck's 1960 GMC Pickup Truck. The Nobel Prize-winning author of such books as "Cannery Row", East of Eden", "The Grapes of Wrath" and "Of Mice and Men," purchased his three-quarter-ton truck new and had it fitted with a custom camper shell. He owned it until his death in 1968 at the age of 66. Steinbeck named his GMC truck "Rocinante" after Don Quixote's horse.
Steinbeck, who knew he had a terminal heart condition, purchased the truck to take a trip around the United States. He brought along his dog, Charley, on the trip--Charley's full name was "Charles le Chein." Steinbeck's road trip would be the basis and inspiration for his 1962 book, "Travels with Charlie: In Search of America."
