The ocean glows beneath your paddle. πŸŒ™

Every stroke lights up the water like liquid stardust β€” and no, your eyes aren't playing tricks on you. This is bioluminescence, and it's real, and it's magic.

Our nighttime tours take you out under the moon where the sea comes alive with light. You have to see it to believe it… and even then, you might not.

✨ This Summer, Paddle Into the Stars ✨

There's a place where the sky falls into the sea β€” where every stroke of your paddle ignites a constellation beneath you, and the heavens stretch endlessly above.

This is no dream. This is Castine Bay after dark.

The night water glows. Bioluminescent plankton light up with your every movement β€” trails of liquid starlight swirling around your kayak like a secret the ocean has been keeping just for you. Above, Maine's dark skies reveal the Milky Way in breathtaking clarity. Below, the sea answers with its own galaxy.

And in the middle of it all? Our one-of-a-kind Floating Planetarium β€” where we'll drift together under the cosmos, exploring constellations immersed in the living light of the water. Stars above. Stars below. Stars everywhere.

This isn't just a tour. It's the night you'll never stop talking about.

Summer 2026 tours are booking now. Bring your wonder. We'll bring the universe.

At Castine Kayak Adventures, we believe that experiencing the ocean's beauty comes with a responsibility to protect it. The health of our marine environment, and all its inhabitants, is at the heart of what we do. That's why we're speaking out to defend the North Atlantic right whale, a species teetering on the brink of extinction.

The NOAA Vessel Speed Rule is a proven measure that reduces fatal collisions between vessels and these gentle giants. Weakening it would be a step backward for conservation and could jeopardize the safety of both whales and those who share their waters. We're committed to advocating for policies that ensure a thriving ocean for everyone. Join us in supporting a strong Vessel Speed Rule. Your support helps us protect the very essence of what makes our kayaking adventures so special. Learn more and make your voice heard before June 1st!

The coast is calling. Will you answer?

There's a rhythm out here that the shore can never give you β€” the quiet dip of a paddle, the glide of your kayak over glass-still water, the Maine coastline unfolding like a story written just for you.

Rocky headlands draped in emerald. Hidden coves only reachable by water. Seals watching curiously from sun-warmed ledges. Eagles circling overhead. And that feeling β€” that wide-open, weightless feeling β€” of being exactly where you're supposed to be.

No experience necessary. Just curiosity and a sense of adventure.

This summer, trade the sidewalk for the shoreline.

Whether you're paddling as a pair in one of our tandem kayaks or carving your own path solo, every tour is a front-row seat to the wildest, most beautiful stretch of the Maine coast you've never seen from land.

Come for the paddle. Stay for the wonder.

πŸ‹ Sharing Our Waters with North Atlantic Right Whales πŸ‹

Did you know that fewer than 350 North Atlantic right whales remain on Earth? These incredible creatures are one of the most endangered large whale species in the world β€” and they travel through the waters right here along the Maine coast.

At Castine Kayak, we believe that being on the water comes with a responsibility to protect the wildlife that calls it home. That's why we're sharing this important information from NOAA and the U.S. Coast Guard:

How to identify a North Atlantic right whale: They have white markings on the head, no dorsal fin, a distinctive V-shaped blow, an all-black smooth tail, and paddle-shaped flippers.

If you're on the water β€” whether boating, fishing, or paddling β€” here's what to do:

πŸ‘€ Keep Watch β€” Right whales visit our waters year-round and can swim close to shore. They're difficult to spot, so stay alert. 🐒 Slow Down β€” Slow to 10 knots near right whales. Vessels 65+ feet must maintain 10 knots or less in Seasonal Management Areas. ↔️ Move Away β€” It's federal law to stay at least 500 yards away from right whales. πŸ“ž Report β€” Spotted a right whale or a marine animal in distress? Call the NOAA Fisheries Hotline at 866-755-NOAA (6622) or contact the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF 16.

These gentle giants face serious threats from vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear. Every sighting report helps researchers track and protect them. Whether you're a local boater, a visiting sailor, or just enjoying the coast, you can make a difference.

As ocean lovers and stewards of Maine's beautiful coast, Castine Kayak Adventures is deeply concerned about the future of North Atlantic right whales. With only around 380 individuals left, every whale is vital to the survival of this critically endangered species. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is considering weakening the Vessel Speed Rule, a crucial protection against deadly vessel collisions. This decision could have devastating consequences for these magnificent creatures and the health of our marine ecosystem.

We believe that a strong Vessel Speed Rule is essential for protecting both whales and mariners. We're joining a growing chorus of businesses urging NOAA to uphold and strengthen these vital protections. Your voice matters! Please join us in calling for a strong Vessel Speed Rule before the June 1st deadline. Let's protect our oceans and these incredible whales for generations to come.

Wow!! Maybe bioluminescence!!!

Deep along Maine’s rugged Atlantic coastline, where jagged cliffs disappear into cold ocean fog and lighthouse beams cut through the darkness, locals tell stories of a strange glowing light that appears almost every night over the black waters. They call it the Ghost Light of Maine.
Some describe it as a pale orb floating silently above the crashing waves beyond the rocky shore. Others swear it changes colors β€” shifting from white to icy blue to deep green β€” drifting through the sea mist against the wind before vanishing completely into the fog and reappearing miles away near hidden coves and forgotten shipwrecks.
Old fishermen claim it’s the lantern of a lighthouse keeper who died trying to guide ships through a violent nor’easter generations ago. Wabanaki legends speak of ancient spirits moving between the ocean and the forests. Retired sailors insist the light appears wherever the Atlantic has swallowed another vessel whole.
Scientists? They talk about atmospheric refraction, marsh gas, or distant fishing boats distorted by layers of cold ocean air.
But here’s what unsettles people most: the light has been documented in coastal journals and ship logs dating back hundreds of years. Harbor patrols avoid certain stretches of shoreline after midnight. Lobstermen say their compasses behave strangely whenever the light appears nearby. And if you watch it too long... people say it begins drifting closer to shore, as if it notices you watching.
The Ghost Light of Maine doesn’t wander without purpose. It follows old shipping lanes, circles underwater wrecks buried beneath the Atlantic, and lingers near isolated lighthouses standing alone against the storm.
And on the coldest nights, when the fog rolls thick across the rocky coast, some swear they can hear distant bells ringing out over the water... even when no ships are anywhere near the shore.
