Saturday morning, my first day of scouting, got a little messy! Many of the water holes I had been crossing, were frozen solid enough to hold me. Not this one.. I broke through after my front end was thoroughly into the hole 🫣 There was no getting out of this, with 3” thick ice in front and behind me - the Runner wouldn’t budge an inch. Good thing I bought that winch! Actually used it twice more through the trip.

WV BAT is gonna take you through an awesome wind farm!

I’m a big proponent of progress and innovation. Why wouldn’t we support the development of technology that can make cleaner energy? I’m not saying wind turbines are perfect, but every learning opportunity is a step in the right direction.

All that to point out that while I’m a supporter of these things, they weird me out up-close. They’re so unnatural! We all know how enormous these blades are and how fast they move, but to see them up close & in-person really boggles the mind. Humans do some amazing things!

All of my 43 years in the outdoors and I’ve never found a deer shed. But this one was presented to me on a silver platter - damn near ran it over. And he’s a big boy!

I’m out scouting for the West Virginia BAT again. It’s been cold and snowy, but I brought a bunch of blankets and I’ve been sleeping in the 4Runner, wherever we land at the end of the night. Night one I stayed at a mountain top outdoor church. The folks in the cemetery were good neighbors - they minded their business and kept quiet. It got down to about 15 degrees overnight, but I slept well and kept fairly warm.

Night two I pulled into the entrance of what appears to be an old coal mine that they’re getting ready to put natural gas wells on. It got down to negative 5 here overnight, and I didn’t stay as warm or sleep as well. But I did survive to ride another day.

Where will I sleep tonight? We’ll find out when I get there. It’s an adventure!

The American Motorcyclist Association applauds the recent decision by the Knox County Commissioners' Office to keep Bat Nest Road in Knox County, Ohio, open for public use.

Working in conjunction with Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDR), the AMA took action to protect this popular dual-sport/adventure route from potential closure. Bat Nest Road, an unmaintained township road and popular destination for riding enthusiasts, faced potential partial closure at the request of a private landowner.
