Know Before You Go: Canada & DUIs
Planning a trip to Canada? Here’s a critical heads-up many travelers don’t realize until it’s too late:
• A DUI can stop you at the border. Even one past DUI, a pending charge, or certain non-driving violations can make you criminally inadmissible.
• You don’t have to be driving. Entry can be denied even if you never plan to get behind the wheel.
• Cruise travelers included. If your ship docks in Canada, you may be denied disembarkation—or even denied boarding the cruise altogether.
If You Have a DUI, These Are Your Options
• Temporary Resident Permit (TRP): Short-term entry for a valid reason; must be applied for well in advance.
• Criminal Rehabilitation: A permanent solution available 5 years after all sentencing requirements are fully completed.
• No automatic forgiveness. Since 2018, DUIs are classified as serious crimes, even if they happened over 10 years ago.
✨ Why use a travel advisor?
Because these are the hidden laws most travelers (and booking sites) never tell you about. A professional travel advisor helps you avoid costly surprises, ensures you’re legally prepared to travel, and protects your vacation before you ever leave home.
Smart travel isn’t just about deals—it’s about access.
