Imagine December looking like this…

I know. It’s September, and I’m talking about Christmas. 😊

Some experiences are worth looking forward to. I’m already dreaming about our 2027 Danube Christmas Markets journey…

There’s something special about wandering through a European Christmas market as daylight fades. The lights begin to glow, music drifts through the square, and the scent of cinnamon, roasted almonds, and warm pastries fills the air.

For a little while, people slow down.

They linger over conversations. They browse handcrafted ornaments. They simply enjoy being there.

That’s what I love most about Europe’s Christmas markets. It’s not really about shopping.

It’s about experiencing the season in a way that reminds us to pause and savor the moment.

There’s something exciting about seeing all the little pieces of a trip come together.

These boxes arrived at the homes of my Ireland travelers recently — filled with a few tastes of Ireland, a luggage tag for the trip, and the Companion Guide I created to help them make the most of their free time along the way.

But mostly, they’re a little reminder that Ireland is getting close. ☘️

In just a few weeks, these boxes will be unpacked, suitcases will be packed, and a group of travelers will meet at the airport to begin the journey.

And then the real adventure begins. 🇮🇪

The windmills of Mykonos are more than a beautiful backdrop. 🇬🇷

For centuries, the strong winds that sweep across the island did more than cool the shores of Mykonos—they powered windmills used to grind wheat and barley into flour.

Positioned high above the harbor to catch the famous Aegean winds, the windmills played an important role in island life and the local economy. Ships passing through this busy trade route could be supplied with bread and rusks made from locally milled grain.

Today, the windmills no longer grind grain, but they remain one of the most recognizable sights on Mykonos—a reminder of what life on this beautiful island looked like long before it became a destination known around the world.

Because sometimes the best part of seeing a beautiful place is discovering the story behind what you’re looking at.

One item you’ll always find with me when I travel is a small crossbody bag.

It keeps the things I use most—my phone, sunglasses, lip balm, a little cash, and anything else I need for the day—within easy reach while leaving both hands free for photos, shopping, or simply enjoying the moment.

I also like that it stays close to me as I walk through busy cities, markets, museums, and airports.

When I’m choosing a travel crossbody, I look for:
✔ Lightweight
✔ Zippered compartments
✔ A comfortable strap
✔ Just enough room for the essentials

The best travel gear quietly does its job so you can focus on the moments that matter most.

One of my favorite parts of travel isn’t the airplane or even arriving somewhere new.

It’s the anticipation.

It’s a quiet morning spent thinking about places you’ll soon explore. It’s reading about a destination, discovering its stories, imagining the people you’ll meet, and wondering what moments will surprise you. Little by little, your mind begins the journey before your suitcase is ever packed.

I think that’s one of the gifts of travel. It gives us something wonderful to look forward to.

Wherever your next adventure takes you, don’t rush through this part. Enjoy the anticipation.

Sometimes the journey changes us before it even begins.

When you travel, do something you can’t—or probably wouldn’t—do at home.

Try the food you’ve never heard of. Listen to the local music. Take the cooking class. Ride the funicular. Learn how something is made. Say yes to an experience simply because you may never have the chance to do it again.

You don’t have to be daring. You just have to be curious.

Some of my favorite travel memories have come from experiences I might easily have passed by if I hadn’t thought, “Well, when am I ever going to get the chance to do this again?”

See the famous places, of course.

But every now and then, choose the experience you couldn’t have had at home.

Those brilliant white buildings aren’t just part of a beautiful view.

For centuries, island homes were commonly coated with lime-based whitewash—an inexpensive, practical material that helped reflect the intense Mediterranean sun and had natural disinfecting properties. Whitewashing became especially widespread in Greece during the 20th century, eventually helping create the iconic white-and-blue landscape we associate with the Greek islands today.

What began partly as practicality became one of the most recognizable views in the world.

And in October 2027, we won’t just see Santorini in photographs. We’ll walk those whitewashed streets and look out over the Aegean. There’s still space available if you’d like to join us.

Sometimes the most familiar places have stories we’ve never heard.

Here’s a simple travel habit that can save you a lot of stress: Take your hotel with you.

Before heading out to explore, snap a photo of your hotel’s name, address and entrance—or take a hotel business card from the front desk.

If you get turned around later, need to take a taxi back, or encounter a language barrier, you have exactly what you need right on your phone.

I especially like having a photo of the actual hotel entrance. In an unfamiliar city, sometimes recognizing where you started is just as helpful as knowing the address.

Then go explore. Getting a little lost can be part of the fun—as long as you know how to get home. 😊

I am actually very good at packing light.

On the way to my destination.

I deliberately leave plenty of extra room in my suitcase because I know I’ll find a few things I want to bring home.

There’s always an ornament for my collection. Then maybe a local toy or treat for my grandchildren. I always bring something edible that is unique to share with the family. Pasta, chocolates, cookies, tea, coffee…

Apparently, “it’s edible, so it doesn’t really count as a souvenir” is how I get into trouble. 😂

By the time I’m heading home, that beautifully organized suitcase has become a complicated engineering project involving strategic rearranging, zipper negotiations, and wondering whether the airport scale can sense fear.

But somehow, I always get it closed.

What’s the one thing you almost always bring home when you travel?
