✈️ Travel Tip Tuesday: Don’t Let a Cheap Layover Cost You More! ✈️

Airlines are getting sneaky — offering super low fares with layovers as short as 30 to 45 minutes. It sounds like a deal… but is it really? Let’s talk about it! 👇

⏱️ 30 to 45 Minute Layovers = A Gamble
That’s barely enough time to deplane, let alone sprint to another gate on the other side of the airport! If your first flight is even slightly delayed, you could miss your connection entirely. And guess what? That bargain fare just turned into a hotel night, rebooking fees, and a whole lot of stress. 😬

✅ What I Recommend for Domestic Flights:
Aim for at least 60 to 90 minutes minimum — and honestly, 2 hours is my sweet spot if you’re connecting through a busy hub like Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, or LAX. Big airports = long walks, trams, and crowds. Give yourself grace! 🙏

🌍 Traveling Internationally? Budget More Time!
If you’re clearing U.S. Customs & Immigration (coming back into the country or connecting internationally), plan for 2 to 3 hours minimum. Here’s why:
🔹 Passport control lines can be 45 to 90+ minutes
🔹 You may need to collect and recheck your bags
🔹 Go through TSA security again after customs
🔹 Then still get to your gate!

I’ve seen clients miss flights with a 2-hour layover at customs — it happens more than you think. 😳

💸 Will the Cheap Fare Cost You More?
Absolutely it can! Consider:
❌ Missed connection = possible hotel stay out of pocket
❌ Last-minute rebooking = expensive new ticket
❌ Lost luggage sent to the wrong city
❌ Missed a cruise departure (yes, this is real!)

A flight that’s $75 cheaper is NOT a deal if it costs you $300+ to recover from a missed connection. 🚫

💡 My Rule of Thumb:
✔️ Domestic connections: 90 min minimum, 2 hrs preferred (especially if you are traveling during the holidays or times of bad weather)
✔️ International connections: 2.5 to 3 hrs minimum
✔️ Connecting internationally WITH customs: 3+ hrs
✔️ Traveling with kids, mobility needs, or lots of bags? Add 30 more minutes!

🌊 Alaska is calling and here's the secret most travelers don't know: WHEN you book matters just as much as WHERE you sail.

Alaska cruise season runs May through September, and the most popular sailings? They sell out faster than a glacier calves. 🧊

Here's my general rule of thumb as your Alaska cruise specialist:

✅ Book 12-18 months out if you want the best cabin selection, early booking perks, and first pick of shore excursions
✅ Book 9-12 months out for a solid selection but still great options available
✅ Book 6-9 months out if your schedule is flexible and you're okay with fewer cabin choices
⚠️ Booking less than 6 months out is possible, but Alaska itineraries go fast, especially summer sailings in July and August

The best part? Booking early often locks in lower pricing AND you can still take advantage of price drops along the way. 🗺️

And here's the thing about Alaska, advanced planning and a little research will make your entire trip so much smoother. Because there are a LOT of great questions to think through before you book:
👉 Which ports should I visit?
👉 What shore excursions are on my bucket list?
👉 Big ship or small ship?
👉 Which itinerary is really the best fit for me?
👉 What month is ideal for my travel style?
👉 Which homeport should I leave from?
👉 Roundtrip or one-way sailing?
👉 Should I add a cruisetour and explore the interior too?

These are exactly the kinds of decisions that can make or break your Alaska experience, and they deserve real answers from someone who actually knows Alaska.
