Honoring Our Heroes – A Memorial Day Tribute

Yesterday's Rededication Program at the Elam Church Cemetery honoring the Men of Color from Charles City County was a powerful and moving tribute. These brave patriots served in support of our nation's fight for independence, and their courage and sacrifice have left an enduring legacy of freedom.

As we reflect on their contributions today, Memorial Day, it is fitting that we pause to remember not only those who fought in the American Revolution, but all who have given their lives in service to this country.

The names etched in stone—Brown, Cumbo, Harris, Scott, Wallace, and many more—remind us that freedom was hard-fought by individuals from all backgrounds. Their stories are American stories, and their valor is part of the very fabric of our history.

Let us continue to honor their memory not just with ceremonies, but by living out the values they defended: liberty, unity, and justice for all.

A while back the monument commemorating black Revolutionary War patriots from Charles City, located at Elam Baptist cemetery, fell down. The monument has now been repaired and a rededication, at the cemetery itself, will occur this Sunday at 1:30pm. We are expecting Dr. Daryl Dance to speak as well! After the ceremony a reception (with food) will be at Elam Church. We hope to see you there! (also feel free to bring your own chair if seating is needed at the cemetery rededication).
