Our Unexpected Journey into WV History: A Trip to Charleston, WV and beyond with the Andrew Mellon Foundation
This past week, I had the privilege of traveling to Charleston, West Virginia, as part of a collaboration with the Mellon Foundation—an experience rooted in memory, movement, and the enduring power of place. Over four days, our team provided transportation services for Mellon staff and partners as they explored key sites tied to the legacy of the Mine Wars and the broader labor movement in Appalachia. What wasn't expected was discovering ties between the Mine Wars and here at home in Jefferson County!
We traveled through a region rich with history and resilience, making stops in , Clothier, Sharples, Blair, Matewan, Bluefield, West Virginia; Pulaski, Virginia; and many more small towns that carry the living memory of miners who fought—and sometimes died—for dignity, safety, and the right to organize. The journey concluded with a drop-off at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport, but the impact of the trip lingers far beyond the final mile.
The Mine Wars, often omitted from the dominant narrative of American history, represent one of the most significant and courageous labor struggles in the U.S. From the hills of Mingo County to the historic streets of Matewan, the region is filled with stories of defiance, unity, and hope. We saw monuments, spoke with community stewards, and witnessed firsthand how these places are keeping history alive—not just through preservation, but through storytelling, art, and activism.
As a transportation provider, we don’t always get to see the emotional impact of where we take people. But this week was different. We weren’t just moving people from town to town—we were helping facilitate a journey into the heart of American labor history. And in doing so, we were reminded that service—when done with care—can play a quiet but powerful role in supporting justice, memory, and community.
As much as we love our wine tours, weddings, and airport runs, it was an honor to be part of this trip, and we’re grateful to the Mellon Foundation and their partners for allowing us to support such meaningful work.
