Take A Bite out of Charleston today with Georgia and learn about a foundational organization that navigated the turmoil of Charleston’s history during, & post, segregation: The United Order of Tents.

Founded in the mid-1800s by Annetta Lane and Harriet Taylor, The United Order of Tents’ mission was to provide aid to ensalved and formerly-enslaved women of color through critical empowerment—housing, education, and financial. The order most significantly attainted homes across the east cost that were important points on the Underground Railroad prior to emancipation.

While the local Charleston chapter was established in 1913, the property at 73 Cannon Street was not purchased until later in 1956; a still devastating time during segregation in the south.

When walking the Charleston streets today, you never know the impact some passing buildings held in forming the city we know & love. All of our Charleston Culinary Guides are City-Certified, and the perfect companions on your adventures to learn the authentic history of Charleston.
