On January 1st, 1776, a new flag was raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts: the first distinctive American flag. The Grand Union was the main flag of the American Revolution. When the Stars & Stripes were adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14th, 1777, it only referred to maritime use.
